If you don't like the system, don't play the game--simple as that.

The lotto money probably does go to education, but the government defunds the state funds for education so they have more to spend.

I bought a program (long time ago)that promised that I would win playing the lottery. I typed in a years worth of winners. I then played $10/week guided by the program. What I found from that was which combination was not going to win.

I can still laugh at myself thinking I was going to get a big return for very little risked.

I am now going to create another panic discussion since I opened pandora's box on cell phones this morning and some went balistic. Will someone please give me your opinion on this...I have seen the powerball winnings of 400 million go to one winner. This in my opinion is an absolute travesty. I suppose some would say it would be ok if they won....Heres my take, why not break this down and allow one hundred or more people to split the pot. I would say that if anyone did receive even close to that amount it could ultimately destroy their life and that has happened to a few individuals. I also believe in my opinion the lottery commission does this because they know greed will win out in more ticket sales....This utter abuse and stupidity makes me want to vomit just thinking about it and this should never be allowed. Government seems to do anything and everything they see fit to do and they get away with it because they think they are untouchables. I have written letters to the Lottery commision in Georgia and Florida and they just ignore them. Maybe some group needs to consider instigating a class action lawsuit to stop this..I would think it would be hard to even give away this amount of money. If you bought stuff with it, where would you put it. What say you? I cannot wait to read your thoughts on this.

This opens up the whole notion of how much money does someone need and how do we distribute or redistribute the amount someone deems to be enough. This idea has been tried in many socialist countries with not much success.

I've thought of this and my view would not to allow hundreds to win, that's like our current welfare give-a-ways to those who do nothing to get it.

Just make the total allowable winning on a lottery to be 100 Million....So 400 million dollars would allow 4 winners.

Why the hell do some people think that winners in any area should share their wealth with others ?

Sarge69

Actually, it already does allow "four winners" IF the four all have the same winning numbers. How would you select the other three, or 10 or 400, if only ONE ticket had the winning numbers?

I hate to see the full power of advertising and psychology used to attract people to something that some people are addicted to.

They already do that...think of beer, diet aids, the poor souls who think they have every disease that's advertised, Viagra (has there ever been a better advertising line that: For erections lasting more than 4 hours.....)

I don’t think the rich play the lottery. The whole thing is supported on the backs of the poor and middle class. My idea would be to not hand out any large lump sums but, dole out the pay-offs weekly or monthly for the winner’s life time only (With no estate value). That way future lottery collections could be used to pay off current lottery obligations. Like paying interest on a loan. The BIG amounts could stay in the coffers to reduce/eliminate state income or sales taxes.

Years ago, when the put was tremendous, large corporations bought loads of tickets.

Spoken like a true Socialist. "This utter abuse and stupidity makes me want to vomit". I suggest perhaps you spend a few hundred dollars to install another toilet in your home as a designated vomiting station. Hanging your face in a fecal depository is unhealthy.

"Maybe some group needs to consider instigating a class action lawsuit to stop this." Just ask any lawyer. He would be happy to have you appointed lead plaintiff in hopes of gaining astronomical fees and leaving the crumbs to be divied up among the class participants. Justice then, in your stated preferential method of economic parity, would be achieved.

And shame on the lottery commissions in Georgia and Florida for ignoring your valuable suggestions. Shame, shame, shame.

Finally I suggest you considered a run to replace Mr. Obama upon expiration of his present term? We the people are deserving of the leadership of one as generous and fair minded as you.

The lottery? It's gambling. If I'm playing poker and it's a big pot, hey the winner takes all. This sounds like the way they play kids sports today. No score, everyone wins son there are no one feels bad. Hey, it life. Every moment is a risk. In the lottery, in the games, in your car. So I am for if you gamble and have the wining hand, take it all.

There has never been a better advertising line, Bruce. Never! The commercial should be accompanied by the song, "Dream on, Dreamer, Dream on" playing in the background.

Here's a novel idea that the government would NEVER go for
Create a website for every lottery
Once a year, January first and on it post where they have spent the money they have taken in
Transparency and honesty seem to be big in their rhetoric so if they truly are they shouldn't have a problem doing that.

But for your own safety, don't hold your breath waiting for them to do it.

I guess I'm rich. Thanks for letting me know HO. Also many of the lottery players are folks who cannot afford health insurance but can afford beer, booze and cigarettes. Oh, and the lottery of course, but that's good I suppose. You know: You can't win if you don't play. I also know that many lottery players favor, "investing" in the Iraqi dinar.

I don't mind the game it's all a croc , it's not for education, it's not 400 m its 200 m in lump sum and then approx 50% in taxes leaves the winner w 100 m. That's still a lot of money. I hope they know what to do with it??? The real problem are the scratch offs . I watch people at gas stations and convince stores spend way too much money on these games upwards of $100.00 and they know which games they want out off many many games which suggest they play often. The govt cheats the public in not supporting education and hurts the poor and un educated with a false hope. Georgia's Hope scholarship is the exception. Residents children need a B average and 1200 boards and state college Ed is free. Not bad Georgia Tech is a pretty good school.

What bothers me is the taxes. You purchase the ticket with an after tax dollar and yet the winnings are taxed!

Scubie on the lottery: I like your idea.
Some sad cases out there actually work themselves up into believing they will actually win that 400 million, then go into a depression when their number doesn't turn up. Your plan will at least bring down the odds.
And speaking of odds...I'm old enough to remember the illegal bookies and their number games which gave players better odds than my state of Pennsylvania allows. Now who was the worst bookie?
