Just getting ready to push the button to order this lens at B&H photo. My question is to anyone who owns this lens... Do you use a cp filter with it or any other filters? and am I correct that it takes 86mm filters?
Thanks in advance for your time :D
Go for it, you will never be sorry!!!! Great lens at a great price.
I am sure you will enjoy that lens. Love mine.
It seems I have started a rush on this lens in the last 2 months. I wish you the best of luck with it! Its truly a great lens, especially at the price!
I use mine a lot, and I use no filters on it at all, haven't had the conditions to need one yet. I rarely use any filters on long glass anyway except for an optically clear protection filter, and I haven't even looked for one in 86mm yet. I do have a 95mm CPL filter and a step-up ring for it, but haven't taken any shots with it yet. I also have a metal lens hood for the 95mm CPL so all I need to do to adjust the CPL is to turn the hood. I can forsee no circunstances where I would want a UV filter for this lens as I primarily need UVs on landscape shots and this is not a landscape lens for me. I do not use UVs for lens protection, but many people do and thats OK too. Better to have protection than not when you are in any kind of hazardous environment.
I've made up my mind to buy one, have been hoping to catch a bargain, no luck. They are the same price wherever you look.

How about you Dback, when are you gonna do it, or have you decided.
Be honest , I am a bit scared . Was going to go with the 100-400 L , I am torn . Maybe in a week or so , after you guys post your images , and MT shooter gets some more up here . I am honing my " patience " skills as we speak .
I am torn between the 100-400 L and this lens as well, my concern with the Canon is that it does not auto focus with the 1.4x or 2x extender. Yet on my recent post apropos the 100-400 L their we're some amazing photos of an osprey and hawk.
Let us know how the Sigma works (waiting with edge with Dback)
:)
We rented this lens for a trip to FL last fall - loved it! Just purchased one afew weeks ago.
This was shot from my kitchen window - hand held - uncropped.

I don,t know if this will help but....
I just purchased the Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Nikon Mount.
It is a 95mm lens. A 95mm to 86mm step down ring comes with the lens.
It also came with two lens hoods. carrying strap for the lens itself and a separate carrying case with its own strap.
FYI I paid $1329.99 brand new.
Paid for it on March 20th and received delivery March 23rd.
Very heavy lens. OS a must if shooting without pod.
Used it on rainy overcast day at Lacrosse game. Pics were great at 500mm.
Wish I new you wanted one. I want to sell mine. It is just to heavy for me. Have only used it a couple times. If anyone is interested let me know. Thanks.

Think I'm gonna pull the trigger on this lens tomorrow. I see B&H is 1069.00. Adorama has a little bundle with a uv filter, and cleaning kit (dont know how good they are) for the same money. Im sure that the day after I order, they will go on sale

I'm glad you guys brought this topic up. I have one on my wish list at Amazon for a couple of days and didn't realize how good a lens it is. Between Ken Rockwell's review and our own MT Shooter's I can't go wrong.
Now all I need is the $$$$$$$.
