Yes and don't be a wise. Maybe you don't understand. a 600 mm lens has a lot of mass. When Left unattended for less than a half of a minute the wind caught on the lens and somehow twisted it right off the Ball head which is capable of holding over 25lbs. Is also a quality unit both head and tripod are manfroto. Enough with your comments If you have nothing constructive to say be quiet.

Don't get your panties in a wad because you said something stupid. I don't care how expensive or heavy a lens is, it can in no legitimate way be compared to a child. If you consider that comment destructive, so be it.

You could have avoided the venom by simply explaining how the lens became unattached from the head. Certainly everyone here knows that if it was properly locked down only a hurricane force wind would blow it off, and then only if the tripod was cemented into the ground. And you'd have found the lens in the next county!

Exactly right. It was a failure of the user, not the tool. Why get upset for that being pointed out? If the insurance will cover it, good for him and hopefully lesson learned.

At the risk of further upsetting you, I'd like to point out that you weren't there either. You were in the house by your own admission.

I was taking pictures of the moon right outside my house with my 610 and tameron 150 -600. I had the whole rig on the moon. I took several pictures and wanted to try something a little different with shutter speeds and f stops. I had to go back in the house to get my flash light, I could have not been gone for 15 sec to a 1/2 minute. When I returned I found the camera on the floor The lens survived the fall but the camera not so well. I cannot change any settings the shutter release does not work, there is a piece on the pop up flash that broke off and all wires are exposed. In addition where the Info window is on the top of the camera there is no info and a big black smear like across it. Where the seems are in the front of the camera on the right side, they are all separated and you can see the guts of the camera. Other than that, Its in perfect condition. Thank God I bought insurance when I purchased the camera. Lets see how that turns out. Here is the strange thing. Last year on May 2nd I fell in a stream above a water fall in Yosemite and killed a D600 which was replaced by the 610. On my 2nd this year this camera met the same faith. I am no longer going to take any pictures on May 2nd anymore. Looks like it is totaled. every one says it might have been the wind concidering the size of the lens. by the way it was mounted from the lens

Lenny,come-on.Do you actually think what your saying makes sense. Your trying to say that the lens what securely fastened to the tripod(srewed TIGHT) and in the space of 20 seconds tops it unsrewed itself off (the securely fastened tripod ) without the tripod moving or topling over. That means that the camera and lens would have to have done 4 to 6 complete turns .It would have taken a wind strong enough that you wouldn't be out there in the first thing. Maybe you had a small tornado pass by in those 20 seconds.
But I guess that some people also believe that pigs can fly.

I am still trying to understand exactly how the break occurred. Was the QR plate still firmly attached to the lens, or was it still contained the ball mount?

The thing I got out of all this is to make sure the camera quick release plate is securely attached to its mate on the tripod - even if that wasn't the problem in this situation.

Isn't it strange all the details on the camera damage and no details on the condition of the ball head, lens mount plate, etc- was anything bent or forced?
