Double Exposure

Is there any way to take a double exposure photo with a camera like a Canon 5D Mark II?

Not really (any camera). There are tutorial on line but frankly what is offered is garbage.

The best bet is for you to plan for post processing and take two or more exposures and then post process.

While I am not sure about the 5D2 in particular (I do not THINK it will allow you to do them), I was nicely surprised to see the new 7D2 does finally have multiple exposure mode for up to 9 exposures on one image. (5D3, 6D and 70D also will do them)
Nikons, from the beginner level up, all allow for multiple exposures on one image, ranging from 3 exposure max up to 10 exposures depending upon the model of the camera. Just select how many exposures you want in that single image, set your selection in the "Multiple Exposure" menu line, and take the shots. Always be sure to turn off the Multiple Exposure function when you are done with it to avoid ruining subsequent images.

Just so you know, neither of these methods includes the OP's camera which is a 5D2. The 5D3, 6D, 70D and 7D2 all will do it.

Nikon cameras have multi exposure settings that work well if you know what you are doing. Most Wedding guys from filmdys do.

I do agree doing it in post works well. - Dave

Drat! I did a Google search for "Canon 5D Mark II Multiple Exposure" and didn't notice that Mark III came up. There sure is a large market for an intelligent search engine!

I would not consider it garbage, did you think, double exposures on film cameras were garbage? It's not any different on digitals!

An excerpt from lynda. The red line through MK II, seems to indicate that this doesn't work with the Mk II, but it's worth a look.

I think the 6D can do it. Try utube for video tutorial

I can take a double exposure with my D800 and my D300S. I go into the menu, do not remember exactly where, and tell it two photos and then I take two photos and they are combined into one exposure. I do have to take both photos, it will not do it automatically. But they will be processed as one photo.

Lots of cameras take double exposures and thinking they ought to do it automatically is ridiculous! The reason for double exposures is to combine two different photos.
