Huh?
The optical viewfinder is the only thing I use to take pictures. . . .
I am referring to looking at the images AFTER taking the shot.

I have now learned they call this chimping. .. .
Sorry . .I am just now getting used to digital. I am told I need to get a HOODMAN LOUPE if I want to be able to see the images accurately on the LCD screen.

What a PITA, it seems. But I suppose it still beats having to wait until your film has been processed. :D

I knew what you meant. I too, pretty exclusively aim via the view finder (wonder why they call it that?), and view the captured image after on the LCD screen. But did not know the term "chimping" either. Do Chimpanzees use DSLRs now? I remember the Gorilla with the Nikon shooting into a mirror. It seems as usual with technology: Digital cameras, versions of MS Windows, automobiles, etc., you take two steps forward but still one step back. Your shooting workflow method seems normal and sensible to me.

Only if you're in a Muslim country.

Wikipedia discusses the origin of "chimping"

I looked, but I think it left out the part about the Chimpanzees and how fascinated they are at looking at the images they just shot.

Another activity similarity that affirms the theory that we are born of evolution and the Chimpanzee is surely not to far back on the evolutionary scale.

Chimping digital by humans is surely one of the "missing link" properties, and also why the term "Just monkeying around....." is so popular with the vast majority of our activities.

We are all simply "Chimps with a better opposable thumb and a larger brain". Put a chimp and a human being in the same room with the same digital camera and you have your proof, within minutes. They will take pictures of each other, then "chimp" the view screen and then grunt OOOH! OOOH! OOOH! at each other.

No gender distinctions here, please. Even refined ladies grunt occasionally.

How the heck do you work with LCDs?

I can hardly see a bloody thing with the LCD screens, so taking a shot with them, is an unlikely adventure. And when I do try and check exposures, the LCD generally throws me off , probably a lot more than if I could not see anything, like in film exposures.

If I crank the light up on the screen, I still can still hardly see a thing but it will throw of any kind of previewing off even more.

In my old NIKON COOLPIX one could at least view the images in the optical viewfinder, and that seemed pretty accurate. (Can you do that with the D750 and I just don't know it?)

In conclusion, must we be destined to wear a dark hood in order to take advantage of the modern improvements of the LCD . . .or have a (shaded) laptop connected to the camera?

Somebody please set me straight on this, as I don't get it.
How the heck do you work with LCDs? br br I can h... (show quote)

I agree. I find the LCD display very hard to see, particularly in bright light. Just today I was experimenting with focus using Auto, manual looking through the view finder, and close up using the LCD. Quite honestly I can not see any difference, and, it was very awkward to focus using the LCD.

I think I'll stick to auto mostly and manual through the viewfinder when appropriate.

I should have added that besides never having to pay any import duties in the USA, I've ALWAYS dealt either through eBay (mostly) and occasionally Amazon for a layer of protection.

I use my EVF on bright days. Otherwise shade with your body somehow.

Clearly this is a Canikon forum. I never have this issue with my Sonys (a65, a77ii and a99). Everything I need is available in the view finder. I can frame and determine exposure before shooting (rarely am I chimping). If I want to review a shot I can use the EVF for that too. The menu settings can also be performed via the EVF. I only use the LCD to show pictures to others.

Nobody does that. It is supposed to come from CHecking the IMage Preview.

Looking at the preview image is a total waste of time.

Looking at the histogram, a blinking highlight display and other image information is extremely useful.

Folks that make fun of pro's checking the LCD between shots are virtually clueless about why and how pro's manage to make money.

I was only saying where the word "chimping" came from. No value judgement intended.
