That's a very nice image of the Bradley House. I can see someone wanting to use it in a book on Lego Architecture. I'd go for it, I'm sure that you will be able to handle your own affairs should some issue present itself.

I would be very very surprised if this is a sham. First of all, the use of the English language is excellent. Second, the content of the request is something I don't think a scammer would come up with (ie. a specific buliding in architecture). I think you are going to have a legit photo published in a book. Well done!! If they were asking for your bank account number to deposit 1,000,000 in funds written in very poor english, I would be worried!!
Sounds like a legit deal to me... I say "Go for it"! You risk nothing, yet stand to gain some recognition of your photography skills and talent!
This does not sound like a scam and I would go for it. here is the thing thoug and you have to consider these things. When I give a print release, it release the photo for a very specific number of copies in a specific language. For instance I would grant a release of 10,000 copies printed in the book titled "Title here" printed in english.
This way if the book go viral gets on the best seller list and they make another run, they have to come back to you at which time you may elect to sell a license. If they decide to print in Spanish, or any other language again they have to come back to you for permission.
Bottom line is you need to stay in control of your media. You license for a specific use and number of copies. NEVER grant unlimited use. There is nothing wrong with giving away the first run in order to get your name in the book if thats what you want to do, just stay in control.

What is to stop them ripping your picture off..?
They asked for permission so go with it but keep all correspondance in case it's a scam.
seems like a good idea to licence it as above though.
Enjoy the fame
I have sent an email to the person requesting use of the picture. I am waiting to hear back from them.
Will keep you posted on where this goes.

It may not be a scam, but what is the benefit to you by him using your work? While it may be nice to get your ego massaged, I would put a price on that photo and very strict limitations on where and how it is used.
As a writer and former publisher, I fully agree that the request sounds legitimate. If the writer wasn't on the up and up, he'd probably not even bother to ask permission, assuming that the photographer would never see the book and its contents, or pursue legal action if he did. Sure, go for it and add to your credentials.

I got contacted from a someone on FLickr wanting to use one of my pictures for a book he is making.

I am writing a book that teaches architecture through LEGO, in 7 chapters dedicated to different styles of architecture. Each chapter contains photos of real buildings, and one chapter is dedicated to the Prairie style.
I am looking for a crisp photo of the Harold C. Bradley House, and I love this photo you have on Flickr. I would need a high-res copy for use in the book and you would need to sign a permission form. You would get credit in the book, and I can provide a free copy of the book which is awesome.

I am a rank amateur when it comes to photography. Request is flattering. I don't or haven't sold any of my photos and don't really plan to.
So is this a sham or is it real.

No sham, the person is just asking your permission before using your image...I've done it dozens of times through flickr.
PS: I don't sell my images; they are free for use with a credit.

Go with it! You will have a book with a photo you took credited to you! That is cool! Think of how many people "borrow" photos from the internet without ever giving credit to the photographer.
Willie,
Being an amateur Photographer and co:author myself, and having the experience of putting a book together (Cincinnati Art Deco by Steven J. Rolfes and Douglas Weise), I can tell you that this could be a very real situation for you. It could be your chance at fame and fortune. I would go for it, but like the others have said, if they ask for money it's time to leave. They should compensate you for your photo if any money exchange takes place.
BTW, I can tell you that when you create a book that includes a lot of photographs that are not your own, you are not making 'a lot' of money. By the time you pay for the rights to use 200+ photos, there isn't a lot of profit left. The reward is the fun in putting it all together and the bragging rights.

Please excuse the double post.
most writers pay for any photos to be used in their books. I know and work with a few of them. In this case, you provide the photo, (free) and will it ever get into print? After receiving your photo and putting it into the book, the book still has to be published and if the publisher says he does not like the finished version, then the book is down the chute.
So, it sounds like this may be a scam to get a free photo for use in a maybe to be published book. Cash talks, and promises walk.
