Why does LR crop from sides of horizontal photos?

I have Lightroom 5, which I love. But I have so much to learn. One thing that baffles me is when I am cropping, and I look at the various non-custom options, e.g., 1x1, 4x5, etc, LR invariable presents me with a vertical crop of my horizontal photos. It crops out space from the sides of the photos, but never the top and bottom. Is there some setting I need to tweak? If this is normal, why? It seems that much of the time, LR’s pre-defined crops don’t work for me.

Thanks for any advice.

Hit the X key and it will flip to vertical.

Wow--didn't know that. I've alway had to drag the corner to flip it, or draw a rectangle close to what I wanted and then select the preset.

Thanks for the tip!

the only reason your getting crops that cut out parts of your picture is because the preset crops that lightroom has (5,7,8x10,etc) don't reflect the actual aspect ratio of your original picture which is a 12x8 scenario. when resizing something has to be cut out to match the original size from the camera sensor

If you have the lock icon set to 'locked' the aspect ratio will be maintained. It will crop from the top and bottom and the sides at the same time.

Wow, another reason I am glad I use Photoshop CS6! You can flip Crop "format" 90 degrees with a button click. I don't usually use the pre-set ratio sizes like 1:1, 2:3, but the Ps CS6 "actual" crops of say 8x12", 12x9", 8x10", 10x8", and so on. Those are also set to say 300ppi or 600ppi, 8-bit or 16-bit. I kind of thought that Lr 5 was the same, perhaps not. Oh, yes "X" key, so it does. I have Lr 4.4 on my LapTop. Not really using it.

I have LR 5. If you start a crop, you can then hit the x key and it will reverse the orientation. At that point you can crop to original or some other size. I just learned this about two months ago. Good luck.
