Newark DE should have many resources available, especially at the University.

Yea, I'm sure. Still working on a no-cost solution because I HAVE to purchase a new camera right now, too.

Sorry, Donna.
You should probably look into a full backup or cloning program to a separate external drive when all this is over.

Agreed, Indi. Probably Carbonite. In the meantime just for the heck of it I decided to try LR5 again and it's working!! Maybe it needed an overnight rest from the restore. The restore did bring things back to from BEFORE I installed the newest version of OnOne software and I did NOT remove OnOne 8 first. Hmmmmmmm. Don't think any of this has anything to do with the Seagate drive not working but I'll take any and all good news!

Could it be a bad USB cable?

SpinRite operates at a more basic level than your operating system and often will "see" a drive that will not mount in Windows or Mac OSX.

Long shot here.. but this could fry a drive.

Have you been unhooking this drive by pulling the USB cord from the computer end. And if you have been doing this, do you first exercise the "Safely Remove" icon from the notification tray in the desktop screen view?

If you don't use "safely remove" there is a very remote chance you will get a short (spark) in the connector which will ripple through memory devices (flash drives, external drives, your camera memory card slot) and do damage.

How, 100 people will jump in here and say "Oh Crap, I been pulling my USB connectors for years and never lost a drive."

To them I say, "your time is coming"

Remember, I did say remote possibility, and I am down three flash drives, and a friend is down the memory card slot on a Canon 5D by not using "safely remove". My flash drives were neither recoverable nor able to be reformatted (dead).

I'd get a tech or Seagate support on this before going further DIY.

PS, much as I hate to admit I did this, I have been teching and supporting for 25 years. That's how we learn.

I never unhook unless I have to move the PC for some reason. All of my aux drives stay plugged in all the time. When I do move I always ask the computer for "permission". Thanks for your input.

Why the heck aren't you contacting Seagate? They made it, they should know. I mean like don't you think so? They probably have a help section with answers to problems similar to yours.

If you have data on the Seagate drive you need I would do this:
Purchase a copy of Gibson Research's SpinRite $89(gmc.com). Money back no question quarantee. Follow instructions, download, burn to CD, boot your Win 8 machine. SpinRite should be able to see your Seagate drive. Run with option 2.
I have used SpinRite for over 10 years on all my drives at least once a year for normal maintence. I use it on all new drives. I have recovered many drives for friends.
Note that all drives will fail the question is when.
Also I have not purchased a Seagate drive in 3 years because of the high error count of ECC errors. Seagate is letting the drive software correct errors rather than producing error free drives. I only use Western Digital or Samsung.
Hope this helps.

Hi Wmontgomery! I was finally able to order the Gibson program you recommended. I've created a CD but have no idea how to use it to try to recover My Seagate Free Agent data. When you have time any advice you can offer to a NON-techie person would be appreciated for sure. Sorry for the lapse since last communication. I've spent a lot of time on their site watching videos and reading the FAQ but must be too stupid to understand how to actually use this. Thanks!

Did you make any attempt to contact Seagate about your problem?

Yes. Seagate's recovery plans start at $499. I thought I'd give the $89 option a try first and that can also be used in the future to test aux hard drives and can also be used on all the computers in our home, too, for testing, repair and recovery. Wish me luck.
