I am wondering whether or not it would be necessary for me to use a Tripod/bipod lens collar when mounting my Nikon p900 which only weighs 899 grams?

No. Mount your P900 directly to the tripod or monopod using the tripod hole on the bottom of the camera. ;)

Thank you I thought as much given that it is relatively light and there is no big lens attached.

jerryc41 - I have posted a few already go into photo gallery and look for my user name. I have not yet shot on anything but auto I am a relative newcomer to proper photography as such although I have been taking photo's for a while. I am intending to start shooting off manuel as soon as our weather improves and I have time. The Nikon p900 is capable of far better than I have produced so far. I have seen some really good stuff on flkr.

Thanks. I have seen some posted. I have to resist the urge to buy one of those. :D

My thought on this: If the lens was sold with a collar, use it.
If it was not sold with a collar, there probably is no need.

Having said that, I find that the lenses I have with collars, are better balanced on the tripod, than when using the camera's tripod mount. And even 899 grams can be a hefty weight depending on what camera the lens is mounted.

Another advantage of the collar, is that the camera doesn't have to hang "sideways" if you want to take a portrait orientation photo. Just turn the lens in the collar and the camera will go with it!
