Moving photos from Photos - help!

Hello everyone,
When I updated to OS 10.10.3, the update included the switch from iPhoto to Photo. I had over 6k files, about 75% were/are RAW. I recently updated my hardware as well, from a 2008 MBP to the new 27" iMac. (That's another story) I also subscribed to PS & LR after the new purchase and now I want to move my RAW files from the MBP/Photos to the iMac using LR/PS.
I moved some files from the MBP to a thumb drive and was about to move them into LR when I noticed they were all JPEGs, not the RAW files. I want the RAW files - the whole enchilada.

My next try was to buy more iCloud storage and move all my Photo pics into the cloud, then download them from the cloud to the new iMac. The iCloud window says "uploading 6,048 items" and hasn't moved in almost 48 hrs.

Anybody have an explanation or any ideas?
Very appreciatively,
- QP

Hello everyone, br When I updated to OS 10.10.3, t... (show quote)

First, the iCloud transfer is only as fast as your internet providers upload speed. If you use Cox, that is about 10mb/sec. That means a minimum of 16 hours to just upload. Then you are going to have another 6 or so hours of download.

Holy Crap! I just looked again at the iCloud update. Originally it said 6,048 items; now it says 6,034. At this rate, I should have everything uploaded sometime around Labor Day!
Thanks for the tip.

I am assuming that you have already set up your new iMac. If not, the easy thing to do is use Migration Assistant to move the files from you MBP to the iMac.
The other option is use the feature called Target Disk in which you set up the MBP so that the iMac thinks it is an external hard drive. Then you should be able to move you iPhotos library from the MBP to the iMac. I cannot remember if you need to connect the two computers by USB cable or if you can use Target Disk over wifi. Then follow any of the guidelines to move files from iPhoto to LR.
I apologize that I don't have the time tools up the details right now. If your new iMac is new enough contact Apple support and they can walk you through this. Just remember that you want to move your entire iPhotos (or Photos) library to you new iMac, then do the migration to LR.
Good luck.

Using Target Disc is about the easiest, but I bet you won't have compatible connections between each computer unless you can do it with a USB cable. The older MBP probably has both or at least an 800 or 400 firewire. The new Mac's have Thunderbolt and have dropped the firewire connections. My hubby has taken over the 5 y.o. MBP and there is no compatible connections. We can use Drop Box or I have a portable HD with USB connections where I can put something on it, then he can plug it into his computer and copy the file. With my MacBook Air I can connect using the Thunderbold to my iMac.

Using a portable USB HD might be the easiest.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the information. I really don't want to use migration assistant because I want to keep the new iMac as clean as possible. I'm not sure how much I can cherry-pick what migrates and what doesn't. Plus, I don't have a cable that is compatible with both machines.
So, what I've done is export a batch of photos "Export Unmodified Originals") to a thumb drive and then import them to Lightroom on the iMac. Takes awhile, but not nearly as long as the iCloud. By the way, when I'm done with the transfer, I no longer plan to backup to iCloud. It was a stressful day yesterday, as at one point I thought my only option was the godawful-slow iCloud. Thanks for everyone's input!

PS Now my only job is getting my iTunes catalog to transfer.

You say you imported into LR. I hope you moved those photos first to a file on the new iMac, then imported into LR. If you went from the thumb drive directly to LR, it will look for that thumb drive for the original photos. And if you deleted what you put on the thumb drive LR is not going to be happy. Get them first on your iMac, then import into LR so it always knows where your pix are at.

SueMac,
Yep, I didn't state that properly. You make a good point.
Thanks!

You can buy a FireWire 800 to thunderbolt adapter from Apple or OWC. I have one and am doing the same thing in target disk mode from my MBP to my Mac Pro

WHEW! Didn't want you to do all that work, then have to do it over again. (reminder of past school days...yuck)

Sounds like you are on the right track. It will take some time, but you'll get them all where you want them. Did you get the new iMac with that fancy screen? My iMac is the 21" one and is almost 2 y,o. I'd love the new 27" but not sure it would fit in my space in the RV.

Cool, didn't know they had an adapter. That would really come in handy going between hubbies lap top and my iMac.
