I intend to purchase a "bridge" camera for an overseas vacation in the next few weeks.

I have "narrowed" down to two cameras and would be most appreciative of any knowledge, opinion etc.

One question that I have and have a difficult time getting my head around is how good at 400 mm could the Panasonic be with a 1" sensor?

Thank you for any info, critique etc

Compared to what?

My Sony bridge with the tiny 1/2.3 sensor at 400?
A ton better I would think.
Or, a FF at 400?
Not nearly as good, again, I would think.

My guesses, of course, since I don't have anything except my bridge to compare with.

You picked two cameras I think I should have! But, sadly, I don't.

The 400 mm is an "equivalent to full frame" number. The real number is 136 due to the 1" sensor crop factor. The image quality is quite good! Try looking at the sample images on dpreview. It is a bit less than obvious, but there is a button that expands details. If you pick the most detailed, a little camera icon shows up on each sample. Click it and you get the exif data where you can find a couple at 136.

http://www.dpreview.com/galleries/reviewsamples/albums/panasonic-lumix-dmc-fz1000-real-world-samples#page=1

Of the 64 photos, only a few are at full 136 mm zoom. Two are a matched pair comparing full wide with full zoom. There is nothing wrong with the detail in the full zoom. Look for the pair I've screen copied.

Another is of a small fishing boat at anchor.

Thank You

I also own a Canon 5D Mark 3 and have a 70-200 mm lens. What I am trying to do is avoid carrying a huge bag of equip to Europe this Fall.

If all I am getting with a one inch sensor (equiv to full frame)
is 136 mm, I might be better off renting a "long lens" and hauling my primary gear

I didn't write it correctly and think I have confused you.

At full zoom the FZ1000 will give you the same "picture" as a 400 mm lens on a full frame camera. That's the whole point.

On a camera with a 1" sensor, the field of view from a 136 mm lens is the same as a 400 mm lens on a camera with a full frame sensor. In a smarter world, we would be comparing angle of view and we wouldn't get confused by this "equivalent" business. Did you look at the photos?

The reason I mentioned the 136 is so that when you look at photos taken with the FZ1000 and read the EXIF data you don't expect it to say "400 mm".

If you rent (or buy) a lens for your full frame camera that will provide the same field of view, telephoto effect or magnifacation your gear will be 10 or 12 inches front to back and weigh maybe 12 or 13 pounds. The FZ100 weighs about 3 pounds and is about 5 inches front to back.

Thank you for the clarification. Yes, I did look at your pictures.

So, if I understand you correctly, if I took the same picture at the same extension , one with the FZ 100 and the other with a ff camera the magnification of the image would be the same.

Put another way, if I took a picture of a person 100 feet away (dismissing clarity) I would have the same "pull in" effect no matter what camera I used???

The issue for me is street photography, so distance from the subject is important.

My wife and I are going to London and Paris in early September and I DO NOT want to cart around 25 plus pounds of gear. Not to mention the weight, there is always the issue of theft.

MOST APPRECIATIVE of your input

I went further down in size for a travel camera. I got the Panasonic LX100. Great lens, great photos, medium sized sensor, etc. And, it is really small. I found a belt pouch that fits it perfect and it is well secured there when walking, talking, shopping or in a restaurant. I'll miss the telephoto some, but not much.

I have found that you need less telephoto (200+) than you think. Your shots are really in the 24-120 range... At least mine were in London and Paris when I was there last September. I used a G1X Mk2 and a 5D Mkiii + 24-70 f2.8LII. All my street work was done with the G1X2 and its touchscreen (LOVE IT!), and my more public stuff (when no one cares that you're shooting), was with the 5DMkiii. Have fun, get great photos, and share them when you come back!

I also user the Canon 5D Mark 3 and have the 24-70. I was thinking of bringing a 70-200 , tele-extender and the 24-70 if I do not purchase anything. Just a lot of stuff to carry and get stolen.

My serious interest is b and w street and I like to get as far back as possible and not invade anyone's space.

I thought that a bridge camera would be a good alternative, but am not sure

Based on what you shoot and how you post the results to flickr, I think you owe yourself the FZ1000. Unless you make a lot of 30"x40" prints, you may never pick up your Canon again!

I have had the FZ1000 since it was introduced and it was definitely the right decision for me , downgrading from a slr and all the heavy lenses.
If your search on FZ1000 here you should find sample shots from members.

The IQ for me is really good and I struggle to see the difference for my purposes.

Both are great cameras but the FZ1000 has the edge in my opinion.

I own an FZ100.
I "downsized" from a Canon system, which with my advancing years became entirely too heavy and complex to carry around.
The photos from the FZ1000 are excellent. They are as good as the Canon on a screen, and there is no discernible difference when printed at A4 size. The normal zoom is 400mm but this can be extended with little or no picture degradation. I am highly satisfied with this camera. Whilst not as refined as a full frame of course, it is significantly better than a smaller sensor bridge camera. If you have a local camera outlet, perhaps you can hire one to try out. I don't normally make recommendations as this is perhaps the best way to lose friends, but I have no hesitation here. Read the various camera assessment sites, they universally give it a good rating.

I guess no one around here owns an RX10 ......I don't either - but I do have a couple other Sonys. The RX10 is my pick. I have seen very strong reviews for it. I understand and use Sony's in camera HDR, sweep pano and clear image zoom ( I do not shoot RAW) The 2.8 Zeiss lens is very attractive. With the 2X clear image zoom, this lens goes to 400mm equiv.
