I was out this morning and observed what I thought to be a hawk. It is about the size of a Peregrine Falcon. I have looked through some of my bird id books and don't see this one. Anyone know what it might be? Thanks for checking.
Thanks Bob, I was looking in the wrong part of my bird book. First time I have ever seen one in my area.
This is an Eastern Towhee. At one time both the Eastern and the Spotted Towhee were lumped together and called Rufous sided. They have now been distinguished as separate species and the one you photographed is the Eastern variety.
Thanks Joe and Bob, once I got in the right section of my bird id book I found a lot about them. I have never seen one before. I am somewhat familiar with hawks and eagles and from the distance I was the size of it appeared to be the size of a small hawk and when I zoomed in on it I saw the straight beak and then I didn't think it was a hawk.
