Welcome!

For exposure, a book highly recommended on this site is Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure."

For composition, even older library books written for film will be great help.

Welcome to the hog. I have only been a member since January and Canon shooter since last January. All of the above are great suggestions. For me, "Understanding Exposure" and David Busch's book on my particular camera were the biggest help in starting. My biggest problem is that sometimes you can get bogged down "studying" that it is best to learn by just going out and shooting anything. Then slowly learn where your weaknesses are and keep working at it. Get comfortable with your camera. This site is great and you will learn a lot. Have fun!

If you would come out of hiding perhaps someone on this site lives across the street from you and could give you some one on one help;
take a course at your local junior college

Hello. I am new to the website and an ameture to photography. It's easy to take pictures in auto. I want to learn the features of my camera and how to use them. I like taking pics of landscapes and sunsets. I want to learn how to take indoor pics without or even with a flash. I need help in composure. My camera is a Nikon D5200. I spend a lot of time on You Tube. There are great tutorials about all things about photography. There are camera reviews, Classes on lighting and software. Also, tutorials on things like landscape photography etc.

Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure"and David Busch's "Nikon D5200 Guide to Digital SLR Photography". The manual that came with your camera tells you HOW to adjust your cameras various settings, Busch's guide tells you WHY you want to change them and Petersons book tells you WHEN you should change them.

Also you might sign up at the Nikonians website. Membership is free for a limited time; forever if you post enough. They have specific forums for various camera models (including a D5000/D5100/D5200 forum), lenses, etc.
