So after a great deal of consideration with regards to buying my first DSLR, I have decided that for hiking, backpacking, travel and such, a nice, lightweight mirrorless camera might be the way to go after all. I'm looking at the Sony models, particularly the Sony a6000, but I am quite open to other suggestions. Would like to stay in the $500-$600 range, as much as possible, and go with interchangeable lenses and Wi-Fi. Any suggestions, oh fine and helpful citizens of the Ugly Hedgehog community? Still would like a nice DSLR some day , but it can wait.
I have the a6000, it is a really good camera, tho a bit of a learning curve.
I would suggest checking out the Fuji XT-1 as well.
After using the a6000 for a while you may not want a DSLR

Looking also at the Olympus OM-D E-M10. I like the touch screen.

I read your discussions of the Olympus--looks like Santa was good to you! Really sounds like a great camera. Thanks!

I had the same set of requirements last year. After a lot of research I decided on the panasonic GX7. It's a wonderful camera with plenty of function. Not only is the camera smaller and lighter but the lenses are too. I've had lots of fun with it ever since.
If money is tight, consider the a3000 or the NEX6.
Another option would be Fuji XE-2 with 18-55mm 2.8 to start. It has wifi and many lens options.
Love my a6000 more and more each day. The stabilization and low light situations amaze me. Only complaint is the life of the battery. So I suggest a charger and extra battery and life will be perfect!
