I was watching a topaz video on masking 4 filter.

I first I was sort of WOW!

Then I was 'eeeeewwww'

Why? Here is the reason (printscreen from the video) using the arrow to show the trouble. I watched other videos on the same subject and well, my opinion is still the same: Topaz does good things if you are happy with 'good enough'.

I sincerely hope that the presenter did not know what he was doing otherwise...

My results with ReMask4 have been much better than that. What video were you watching?

Yes. I watch about anything related to PP to glean information and find ideas.

I also have Topaz Remask 4 and watched the same video with the donkey. It does Ok, but like many programs, masking extremely fine details (such as hair) remains a real challenge for me...I don't have the patience one needs to do it right.

This is a great video from Adobe TV on the new Refine Radius Tool in Photoshop CC Refine Edge Dialog. http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-photoshop-cc/selecting-soft-edge-objects-with-refine-edge/

Based on recommendations I'd seen here on UHH, I started evaluating Topaz products as they've gone on sale. Some, like re-mask and glow, I concluded did not do much for me and I'd have to say that none of them do anything I could not do (sometimes with considerable time and effort) using my basic editors (PSP 7 and Raw Therapee).

But saving time and effort is a consideration and so I've purchased a few of them. But you cannot expect miracles. At best you should expect some marginal improvements and sometimes a user interface that is easier to use. And sometimes when I run out of ideas I may even review some of the pre-sets.

I did this on the other day using Topaz Mask4. Good enough for me.

Sadly I take the 'good enough' as a negative.

Do post the original so we can see the real masking quality?

That is the original. I cropped and resized before masking.
It was more of "I wonder what this would look like."
Fur fun.

I think Ron means when you upload click the store original box on the right side. Then we get more than a thumbnail to study.
