O.K. First off, what kind of images are you trying to capture?? Secondly, what kind of camera and lens do you shoot with?? After you've answered those questions, just get out and shoot!! If you're serious, practice will help and by reviewing your pix you will learn. 8-)

I want to thank everyone for all the great advice. I am going to visit everyone of these sites and I have ordered three books from Bryan Peterson, I have a wealth of information now. Definitely came to the right place for answers. Thank you all again! Gotta go, lots of great learning to get to. ;-)

Suzi- we're all learning here, even us old photogs. Remember the only stupid question is the one not asked. If you feel silly asking something on the forum, don't hesitate to send me a PM, if I'm not sure, I'll try to find out. Don't worry, I'm retired, I've got the time.

Just a suggestion if it hasn't been made... Join us on teh photo challenge in here... photogirl is good at getting you to challenge yourself. I have been doing it for the 86 days now and have learned more than I have in a long time. I also have Bryan petersons boon Understanding Exposure (3rd edition) it is hte newest and he really explains the digital generation. it is easy to understand. Take your camera with you where ever you go and practice. Take the same photo several ways using you cameras settings... and pleas we woud love to see you in the daily photo challenge... you will be amazed.

O.K. I've responded to this same type of reply before. There's no such thing as a stupid question....only stupid answers. And how about this....'Ignorance is not an act of stupidity, but merely an absence of knowledge." ?? Aren't we all here to learn? Trouble is, no matter how much I learn I realize how much I don't know. It makes a person want to learn/understand more about this art form. You will learn here Suzi....I think it's a law or something on this site. You, as well as all of us that follow this site have no choice.   8-)

I took up photography almost 2 years ago, when I started I SUCKED, no joke about it. I still suck but at least now my suckiness isn't screaming at me in capital letters, it's been downgraded to lowercase suck. ;)

I'm pretty much self taught, I took once 8 week class (saturday's only) at my local college and learned about exposure triangle, shooting manual and putting it all together. I joined a few on-line photography forums and posted my pictures for C&C, I learned a lot that way. I listened to what every person who replied had to say, asked questions when I didn't understand and posted my "corrections" for their feedback. I worked on one thing at a time and told my on-line audience what I was working on so they could tell me if I was moving in the right direction, when I was getting positive feedback on that one issue, I moved onto the next. Slowly it all started to come together.

Currently in my journey:
I still post on-line for C&C (still ask questions if I don't understand the feedback).
Joined a photography club to get feedback from "real" people (as a plus you gain a bunch of new friends who really are interested watching you grow know where you started from).
I have a mentor I meet with once a month and go over my "work" from the previous month.
I read, read and read some more on anything photography related I can get my hands on.
Practice, Practice, and yep you guessed it I practice some more.
and believe it or not: Offer C&C on other people's images. When your not invested in the picture, it's easier to see what could be wrong. This helps me dissect my own work as well as I start looking for things I noticed in others work (trees growing out of heads, awkward posing, cropped limbs, etc).

MWAC...Great reply to Suzi529    Most of us suck, and get really frustrated when our idea of images aren't all that good after c&c answers. Heck, I've been takin' pix since the '70's and finally gotten some shown on TV,on-line,and Vacation mags. You have to learn how to crawl before ya can walk. 8-)

I suggest you go to http://www.creativelive.com/courses/digitalphotography and enroll in the free 5-day workshop "Fundamentals of Digital Photography 2012" which starts on April 9th.

If you enjoy the live on-line class you will have the opportunity to purchase the course for a discounted price - then you can re-watch the class as often as you like.

See you in class?

I would recommend a meetup group in your area www.meetup.com to meet folks from beginners to professional to share and gain knowledge. Look for intro classes from groupons and amazon local deals in your area. This is a great place to begin and of course keep browsing Ugly Hedgehog for great advise.

I just bought, Bryan Peterson's book "Understanding Exposure" on Amazon and glad I did it is helping me understand photography much better and I have only started reading it. I can now get off Auto and it is starting to make sense to me. I know I will be referring back to it until I have a better concept of everything. Great book.
