I got my Nikon D300S back in 2010 and have loved and used it ever since. However, I've been on the lookout for its upgraded version/replacement (i.e. same price range [~$2500 body only] with same robustness and versatility and whatever improvements Nikon has come up). I thought for a while it might have been the D610. Now the D750 looks awfully good. Is the D750 what I've been looking for, or should I keep waiting? Any insights would be mucho appreciated. jdm

Well the D750 is a full frame…so depends on whether you have FX lenses.

Yeah, I did consider the D810, but thought it was a little out of my price range. Plus I'm not sure I need all those megapixels. But you're right -- it's one heck of a camera. jdm

Check out this video showing the capabilities of the D750, which is in your price range. It is a full frame camera, so your lens collection may determine whether it is a fit for you. If video and low light capabilities matter to you, this looks like a winner. Good luck!

I bought my d7100 refurbushed by nikon turned out to be only activated 20 times which I assume was them testing it. I paid half price. on amazon I just saw a factory rebuild for 2449.00 which would be in your price range I think.

I'm in the same situation. While the D750 has a lot of positive features, most don't consider it a real replacement for the D700. It lacks features that would be considered at the "Pro" level.

The D300/300s are considered to be "Pro" crop style cameras. Hopefully its sucessor will come out soon...although it is well overdo!

Be aware that if you do not get new lenses you will never get the most out of a 750 as your D300 is DX (cropped) and the 750 is FX (Full frame). So your budget if you select the 750??? Kind of down the drain.

Better get the 610.

I found myself in exactly the same situation just a few months ago. I waited for the D400, but just gave up. The D7100 and D610 jus felt too flimsy, after getting use to the. D300s construction and ergonomics. The 750 was tempting, but it too suffered from the same difincies of the other prosumer models... Long story short, I bought a refurbished D800 from Adorama and a refurb. 24-70 directly from Nikon and haven't looked back since. I can't begin to tell you what a great decision that was for me. Since then, I sold my collection of DX glass and picked up a new Nikon 70-200 f2.8 and a new Sigma 50 1.4 Art lens to add to my growing collection of FX glass. After buying a 14-24 Nikon or 15-30 Tamron, my kit will be complete. Trading up to a pro body FX was for me, a great decision. The FX glass especially! I was amazed by how much my "best" DX glass depreciated, as opposed to what I see used FX lenses are selling for. Whether you opt for a pro body or not, the switch to good FX glass is a No Brainer. If you love the feel and ergonomics of your D300s, the I'd look for a refirurbished model built on the D800 platform. BTW, I'm happy to say that my beloved D300s makes a Fantastic backup for my outstanding D800 !

If there is nothing wrong with the D300s then why change it ? It is still the leader in C format as far as camera quality goes. Like the previous hog, I still have mine as back-up for the D800.

As I have said here before, I have both a D300s and D700, only FX glass from 16mm to 300mm and can not fathom ( or afford) a change anytime soon. If it ain't broke........

If you can afford it, go for the 810. It is the natural upgrade path from the d300, then d700, then d800. The d750 is a more a prosumer camera. Where the d800 and 810 are more entry level pro cameras.

I also had the D300s and when the D7100 came out, I upgraded to the D7100. Loved the D7100, IQ is fantastic, and it has double the pixels as the D300s. Could not be happier.

UNTIL I inherited some money from my Father and I wanted to go full frame. So I purchased the D750 with the 28-120 f/4 lens. Love the D750. I already had a cache of FX lens, as I planned in advance that someday I would go FX.

So how do I compare the D7100 to the D750. In good light, you can not tell the difference unless you really go deep pixel peeping. In low light, I think the D750 wins, but not by as much as I would have hoped.

Both the D7100 and the D750 are a significant upgrade over the D300s.

I love both of my Nikon Cameras. I am happy with both. So the bottom line is, if you already have a cache of FX style lens, I would go with the D750. If all your lens are DX lens, go with the D7100. And either way, both are great cameras and you will not go wrong with either.

Now that I have great camera equipment, I just need to work on my composition. Which when you get to the real point, is more important that choosing between the D7100 or the D750.
