( The P900 does not shoot raw ) Lietz yes I was aware of that in the lead up to buying one, I will have to make the best of what the camera offers as is.From what I have seen of sample Jpegs it is going to be a big improvement on the Panasonic Fz72 that I had.

Hi there I am a newcomer to photography so please excuse my very evident ignorance. I have a question regarding intelligent Auto or Auto. What can I expect in terms of image quality in the use of this function particularly in the photography of birds? I am about to purchase the new Nikon p900 and would like some advise as I have not yet to learnt how to manually set a camera.

prcb, Hello and welcome to the Hog. Your question raises issues that will never be settled because the answer is yes, and no, or maybe black and white. If you understand the concept of AUTO mode you will realize that there are situations under which the camera is totally over-whelmed. In other words, 75% to 80% of the time AUTO modes will give very good results, possibly better than the operator is capable of capturing in manual mode. Then you encounter the couple who want you to shoot them standing in front of a beautiful sunset. Your camera is going to start drawing cartoons trying to figure out how to do it. You must use manual modes to get the image as it appears. Therein lies the difference between manual and auto modes. You also must realize that you can combine auto and manual features. Sports shooters will often shoot in AV using auto ISO. The experienced shooter will know the requirements for the shot and configure the camera accordingly, be it in auto or manual mode.
