Last night I set Nikon D600 to “Scene” and selected “Party Indoor”

I use back button focus.. when composing a shot at the party….I press the shutter and nothing happens, (except maybe the flash will pop up), push the shutter release button again, nothing!! However, when I press the back button focus again, the picture is taken. do you think this is normal? I can not find anything in David Busch’s. book about this nor in the Nikon manual.

Is your camera set to only release the shutter when the shot is in focus? Could it be that the shot is out of focus but by pushing the BBF it brings the shot into focus and then the camera shutter would release?

Most likely the camera is having trouble focusing in low light and you have the shutter release priority set to demand focus before firing. Sometimes it is getting it, sometimes not. Try turning on your focus assist light...a menu choice.

Check for the green focus light when you press the focus button.

Or change your shutter release focus. But then you may get some blurry shots!

Yes it is set to release when in focus....but I didn't know the
BBF would release the shutter....interesting, will have to test this theory by returning to the bar tonight with no drinks, maybe that was my problem too

focus assist light is on, my AE/AF button is on lock

I did not check for green focus light...

So you have it set to BBF, and in Scene mode the back button releases the shutter? I use BBF on my D610 to focus, but it does not take a picture. I just tried, and I can't duplicate that situation with my D610.

Mine is set to take a picture when I press the shutter, regardless of focus. Maybe that's the difference.

I'd like to see a "Party Mode" that inserted party people into the scene being photographed. It would make lonely stay-at-homes seem more popular. :D

What is your custom setting for AF Priority? If set of FOCUS the camera won't take a picture unless it is in focus. Could be when you press BBF button it resets the focus and then the picture is taken.

now at home ...i tried to duplicate the same scenario...a bit different lighting than in the bar......but now the picture is taken when I "release" the shutter, whereas before I would press the shutter, nothing happened, but then when I pressed the BBF again the picture was taken. I still can not figure it out...
