I have the prime 50 mm, f1.4 lens from my old Nikon F Photomic FTN camera that I'd like to use on my D600 DSLR. Can I use it safely if I just turn off the Auto Focus? I haven't even tried to fit it to the D600 in case that could be a problem.

NO! It will damage the aperture tab on your D600, It's a non AI lens, it can only work on the Df, with A & M mode, It can also mount on all D3xxx, D5000, D60 and D40 Nikon body but bo meterring. Of course manual focusing!

Just in case you have other older lenses you'd like to match to your camera here is a link to a compatibility chart that I found very useful.

You van modify it to AI with a kit which is hard to find nowaday!
I had modified two of my non AI nikon myself by cutting a portion of the aperture ring ridge, but you have to know where to start precisely, otherwise you will distroy the lens. Home modifing will distroy the valve of the lens, but it bacomes AI lens and works on new Nikon camera with the aperture tab and I am not selling any of them anyway!

Also, for information on any other lens, check your user's manual, under "Non-CPU Lens" or "Non AI Lens."

Sorry for the confusion. This was meant for the OP. I quoted you as it seemed more informational. I should have clarified.

Don't try to use it on your D600 unless/until it has been modified. If the lens has not been modified it will damage your D600.

You can have your non-AI lenses modified to AI specs by John White at aiconversions.com. I had him convert my 50mm f/1.4 and the work was done promptly and properly.

Another firm offering similar service is LeZot camera repair. Not having used them I can't comment on their service.

It must be modified to AI then you can use it on any of your cameras. As is there are some older bodies that the AI index pin can be raised so as to not hit the aperture ring on the back. I do not know if the DF has the feature of being able to raise the index pin or not so check prior to trying to mount it on that model.
Then when all that is done really enjoy that great classic lens on any body, it is a gem. (Some do not meter though so guessing or an external meter will be needed)

I have a Canon EOS DSLR and was looking at all my old manual focus primes one day and found a way to use them on my DSLR. I bought a FotodioX adapter and all these old primes have came back to life ! Check out their web page , they have a HUGE selection of adapters to choose from, just remember that you will have to shoot in a priority mode or in manual.

That is the nice thing about the EOS system.
Almost any lens you run across within reason will fit on your body with an adapter and no additional optics in the adapter needed (Except for Canon's old FD, FL and R lenses need an optical adapter)

Well I did need the adapter w/ the lens in order to focus to infinity. I adapted old Rokkors to the EOS. Works very well.

I use my dad's old 50mm f 1.4 Ais lens on my D610. As long as your lens is Ais or Ais converted(meaning that it has the metering tab on the base of the lens mount) it should work fine. If it is an earlier model it might break the meter sync tab on your camera.
