I would like to know what a "Street Photographer" is and does, and what does he do with the photos he takes ?
Thanks and appreciate your input.

Hi Ed, I don't shoot to much street. But it is the same as my pictures of everything else. I just see an interesting spot with folks in it or an interesting person. Just something that catches my eye.

Nice question Ed.
To me (from the old school), I always understood street photography as freelance photo-journalism. But I think the definition has become more casual, more towards general walk-around photography. But I could be wrong. It could mean someone who walks around taking pictures of streets!
One might say a street photographer is a homeless person, with a camera. (Demonic grin) I have always thought of a street photographer as someone who takes "noir" candid images of the human condition. More of a documentary style and purpose.
Today, many just think that any candid image of strangers, in color or not, is what they think of as street photography.
In downtown Sonora, an old mining town with old buildings and shops, there is a nice bench. A great place to sit, chat with folks during the tourist season, and just people watching. . .sometimes getting an interesting candid shot or two. For me, I tend to look for something that leans toward the artful direction, but as most here know. . .that is where my old "CRS" mind and eye goes!

ditto what he said minus the part about Sonora - Look up Henri Cartier Bresson who was the preiminant street shooter.

It is a sort of 'life-as-it-happens' thing. Over the years there have been photogs who specialized in it. Do a search on Henri Cartier Bresson. It was his strong suit and he was considered a master of street photography.
Or it could be someone who photographs pot holes in the street. LOL
Thanks to all you guys, appreciate the responses, any other input is appreciated
Hi NikonEd
I was hoping to hear a response to the second part of your question which is "what does he do with the photos?". I thought someone could address whether the pictures are published or posted and if model releases are necessary or sought, etc. I just read an ebook from a street phtographers who doesn't seek releases - he just gets in the face of people, takes a picture and then walks away. Interesting style but he definitely didn't espouse asking permission or seeking releases. His book was peppered with the photos he took, many from different countries. Just curious what others think.
It's guy who takes a picture of the street and then he looks at it all day.
Just feeling smart assed this morning. Please forgive.

I think is exploitation - i think that kind of behavior degrades people and it is self-aggrandizing

As has been hashed out ad infinitum here on the forum...it's not illegal to take pictures of people on the street and publish them in certain formats. In this case, a "photography book" a format that is considered art.

true.....and it is not illegal to bundle worthless documents and sell them to investors. It is not illegal to torture prisoners of war. It is not illegal for banks to use robo signers to evict people. It is not illegal to send drones with bombs which will certainly kill innocents too. It is not illegal to rape women in many parts of the world or put them to death for being raped......and it's not illegal to shove a camera into somebody's face and take a picture......so hey if its legal it must be OK right? Wasn't that the S&L loan defense? The Enron defense? The Florida make my day defense.......
it is not OK to use people for one's own personal gratification - even if later on you call it "art."
