Whatever your printer and you seem to like best. try different brands. Glossy shows the most detail useally.

14kphotog: That's interesting. I would think that any type of paper would show the same detail. Hmm. I have an Epson Stylus 1400 printer and I always use Epson paper, but just can't decide which paper is best, altho I'm leaning toward matte. Thanks for your input.

One of my printers is the Epson 1400 and for my portfolio and working proof prints I use the Epson Premium Luster in letter size
and like that very much. People who have seen the prints are constantly complimenting me on the quality. I also use premium matte paper in it for landscape prints.

When it comes to making fine art type prints I use the Epson Stylus Pro 3880 and use several different types of paper with that printer depending on the mood I want to convey.

The Red River sampler is an excellent suggestion. I use Red River papers and have great results. I particularly like their Aurora Art White CS6. It's a moderately heavy matte that takes ink very nicely. I also use their 60# Polar Matte card stock.

My favorite is luster generally for 8x10 and larger, but I do use matte for female portraits and gloss for smaller snap shot type pictures.

To me, it's a personal preference. I buy bulk glossy at Costco and it works just fine with my little hp printer. If I'm doing something on commission, I always ask the buyer what they would prefer and have it printed commercially, using my home prints as just examples.....

It looks as if Red river Paper sample pack might be
what you might want to look at.
I use Polar Satin all the time---it gives me what I
want for most everything.

I would like some opinions on the best type of photo paper to use for printing: matt, glossy, etc. Is it matter of personal preference, type or size of photo?

Glossy helps a print that is 11X14 or less "pop" when you look at it. I think that's just human nature. Look at a deeply glossy new car and look at one that is matte finished and you'll recognize that your mind automatically prejudices you that shiny is better.

With that said, it seems that 16X20 or larger makes the mind think in terms of framed artwork and those come across better as matte. Go even larger and canvas texture and no frame at all is more pleasing for an enlargement.

But it also depends on the environment in which the print is going to be viewed. You wouldn't want to display glossy prints at an art show but you probably would at a photography show. You wouldn't want glossy on a wall-sized mural in a train station, nor would you want canvas, but matte would be the most likely choice. For something 6-foot X 8-foot or 4 foot X 6 foot you might choose matte or canvas but glossy would be unfavorable.

So, I'd say typically glossy for 11X14 or less but it would be totally personal and environmental choice for 16X20 and larger.

Also, some people like to experiment with papers and finding cheap paper prices but lab tests have proven that paper and ink sold by the manufacturer of your printer will give you the best prints and longest print life before fading.

I prefer the Matt look, But most recently started to use
Inkpress Metallic Papers 13x19 in satin finish.
My son races Nasa and Metallic brings the colors out in the cars.

Yeah, I like Inkpress in luster, especially, and also in matte, which I get at B&H at good prices, but based on colo43's statement I'd like to try the metallic satin. Also Costco's Kirkland gloss is an especially good buy, comes in 69lb weight, and prints well on my Canon i9900 printer.

I have used Red River for years with my Epson 4000 Pro. It's as equal if not better than Epson paper. I also use it on my Canon portable printer with great results. Price is good also.

Personal choice. I have an Epson printer and their paper works well with their ink. I experiment with other papers but usually print with Epson. I use Ultra Premium Glossy for the small stuff. For the larger prints I prefer Ultra Premium Luster. Epson Velvet Fine Art is a fantastic paper for landscapes or flowers.

Being a bit on the cheap side, I often get my paper at Staples. Currently I am having nice results from their Photo Supreme Matte paper, sold as 8 1/2 x 11 sheets in packs of 50. Produces very nice results, and can be printed on both sides. This is more like a very light posterboard rather than a paper, which is fine with me.

BTW, remember that photos often need several days to settle in and show their final result. I have one large photo done by AdoRama that took almost a week and a half to fully realize its final look. Now it's great!

I'm sure we all are happy with our purchases. I just received my 2nd shipment from ADORAMA of the metallic satin papers.
I just happened to come upon them while searching for paper for my new printer. And i could not be more pleased.
