I am an amateur just taking photographs for my enjoyment and sometimes for my friends. I travel and take travel photos and wildlife in my backyard. so do you recommend the new and expensive Nikon d72000 or the much less expensive d7000.

I have a D7000 and a D810, I use my D 7000 for everyday travel remember the 7000,7100,7200 are DX lens , I use a 18-270 Tamron 90% of the time... If you can try for the D-7200 it has some nice upgrades but for your first upgrade to a SLR any one of the three will do

Neither. Get a refurbished D5300. It takes the same images as the D7100, costs and weighs half as much, and has extra features like the articulated screen.
You'll really appreciate the weight difference on travel.
D7200 will last you many years. The improved buffer is well worth the money to someone getting their first camera with money not being a huge issue. For your travels, wild life, and other occasions you aren't going to wonder if you had just gotten the d7200 because you already have it. Some here will rightly say it wasn't the camera probably, but why leave it to question when it is your first. You will love the D7200 as others love what they are using and when some one asks about the D7500 you will be able to smile with the rest of us.

I have written Nikon and asked a specific question on the D 7200. I wanted to know if it offered Group Area auto focus. The D4s has this feature and it is specifically for photographing fast moving subjects. Nikon has lagged behind Canon on this specific area and the Group Area auto focus works very well on the D4s. If the 7200 has it and you like wildlife photography, then buy it. If it does not have this feature the differences between the 7100 and 7200 for the average photographer is minimal.

Bill - for your info - you can download the full D7200 manual direct from Nikon, as I just did here in Europe - no Group Area auto focus on this particular camera !

As of two days ago, the official Nikon site did not have the manual for the d 7200 available. Thanks for the shout out. I will look it up. It is too bad about the group AF. In that case for me there is not sufficient upgrade to focusing system on d 7200 to justify switch. Because I could simply take more out of focus birds with the increased buffer of the d 7200 than my current d 7100.
Still, check the specifications of each side by side and if the 7200 has something you want that the other does not you will have your answer. Google: d7000 vs d7100 vs d7200. The 7000 and 7100 were Nikons top of the line DX cameras when they were introduced and following that tradition the 7200 is now their best. Only you can decide which is best for you but I would be inclined to go for the 7200. ;)
The D7200 is out, but still no online manual as of a few minutes ago...

I have been checking for the D7200 to be added to the Manual Viewer app for the iPad- as of a few minutes ago it was still not listed there either. ;)

I have the D-7100 and really like it.
The D7100 is the most value out there right now for DX. This is the camera I would buy, it is semi pro, the 5000s are not.

These are all great cameras, and the latest one is the one that will provide the best image quality, but the D7000 is no slouch.
