I'm looking for software to create slide shows on a Mac computer. I used to use ProShow Gold on PC but not familiar with Mac programs.
Also, I'm using an OS X Yosemite which I bought refurbished and doesn't have a CD/DVD so guessing I'll have to buy a CD/DVD burner to use with it??? One thing I hate about Macs is lack of information/details about the computer. For example there is a switch at the top of the cylinder indicating lock/unlock which I have NO idea what it is for???
Any help would be much appreciated.

I use this a lot. You can output to all kinds of media as well as a run-time application that has excellent quality.

I use and love Pro Show Producer by Photodex. It is designed for Windows but they say it can run on Mac in most cases. Check it out at www.photodex.com.

iMovie which comes on all Mac's will do a nice job of a slideshow, a feature many folks overlook thinking it only does movie editing. Google "iMovie slide show" and you'll get a lot of hits to explain.

Yosemite is the operating system, not a kind of machine. So you'd have to say what model machine it is to let us help you. There are copies of the very brief instruction guides on the Apple site but they aren't really manuals - they do, however, have technical drawings with buttons and ports marked. If it's a newer model, you will probably have to add a DVD player if you want one. I got mine from Apple store for $79.

Here is a link to a slide show I did quite a while ago with Pro Show Producer. I have since updated the program several times. It is much better now.

Yup on the imovie! Free, already installed (should be), and quite a powerful little program. And easy to use.

I don't know what cylinder you mean. Do you have an iMac or a laptop?
Try iMovies (which comes free with OS X) for your slideshows before you spend money on another program.
Apple has stopped putting CD/DVD hardware in it's computers (both iMac and laptops) to help reduce weight and allow for a thinner profile. Apple offers a CD/DVD drive called USB Superdrive which connects (as the name indicates) by USB.
If you go to the Apple web site you can find free manuals, free tutorials, on line support, etc.

p.s
You'll find Apple support much more friendly and much more helpful than MicroSoft.

Look in your under your launchpad icon. See if you have an icon for a program called Keynote. I have not personally used this program but it came with software when I originally purchased my Mac laptop. I believe it is similar to the common Windows program Powerpoint.

It's a Mac Pro 3.7 quad core. Manufactured late 2013.

The lock/unlock may be to access its insides, it's one of the few macs you can get into and fiddle. No other mac's have buttons or controls with a lock emblem on them. Look at the diagrams on the mac support site, there'll be a quick start guide and a brief instruction manual.

Great machine..

This is the big round cylinder computer isn't it? If it is the lock button is to take the outside off to get to it's innards.

Look under "File" in iPhoto for "Creat Slideshow". Select a folder of pictures you want to look at or select some pictures within a larger file. Select the time between slides. Select the transition effect (ie Ken Burns), select what music to play, if any, you want the slideshow to play to. Click start.
I have Mac TV so I play my slide shows on my livingroom TV if company is involved.

Another vote for iMovie. It really does a nice job. I did a slide show of my friends wedding, added music to it, included a trailer in front of the slide show and everyone that saw it absolutely loved it!! You can edit the time that each pic stays on, put in a huge variety of transitions in between each pic & adjust the song length to fit the slide show. It's pretty easy to use and if I can do it anyone can do it.

iMovie also lets you select the start and end points for "Ken Burns" movements for each image.

I like PicturesToExe by WmSoft. You can go super creative or super simple with it.
