The latest statistics suggest this trend has reversed, that the slow down in sales was due to people hanging on to old equipment a bit longer due to the economic slow down.

You cannot seriously edit on a tablet so there will always be a supply of desktop and laptop equipment.

In fact apart from internet you cannot do anything seriously on a tablet as half the screen is obscured by the touch keypad.

Funny, and timely. Three of us were talking about pictures taken on vacations lately, and one guy was complaining that he couldn't do anything with the pictures he took on his ipad. Seems he took pictures with a Nikon, don't know which model, but a DSLR, and they wouldn't open or he couldn't open to many on his Ipad. Hmmm, so he said from now on he will take pictures with his Ipad or Iphone, versus the DSLR. To each their own.

I've had great luck buying from tigerdirect.com - they have an ample supply of both desktops and laptops. They have both new and refurbished - I always go for the refurbished. Brand names such as Dell, Lenovo, HP, etc. I've bought all my external hard drives from them also. They do have the tablets and other small items and also printers, scanners and other goodies. I've had no problem with returns, either, on the few occasions when something has had to go back. They are based in Florida.

Desktops will always be available. At my age, "always" has a limited meaning. :D

Storage is never a problem because of external drives, now becoming solid state drives.

I will probably have left this mortal coil before 17" Laptops and Desktop PCs have gone the way of all good things

The proliferation of tiny computers does not indicate that larger notebooks and desktops are on their way out. Have you noticed the large numbers of large screens with 4k and similar resolution, now at fairly reasonable prices? And there are plenty of 15.4-inch and 17-inch laptops available for those whose eyes can't deal with a 13-inch or smaller screen, like mine.

All in ones are to say the least are non performers. People who buy them need to do some homework if they plan to use them for anything other than email.

I finally got a tablet after years of resistance and it confirmed my earlier impression that it is no substitute for the office machine. IMHO, neither is a laptop though a laptop is more versatile than a tablet. I took mine on a recent vacation and except that it gave me eye strain, it was a convenient way to keep up with my email - so long as I did not have to respond.

Still, a tablet does have some good uses - things you can do easily without a keyboard or mouse:

- Games
- maps
- reading matter, even email when no response is needed
- viewing photos and videos

Sorry, I can't think of any more.

I do most of my photo editing on my laptop - it is an HP ProBook with an Intel i5 processor running a 64-bit Windows 7 OS with a solid-state drive. It is blazingly fast on most tasks, and even doing tone mapping on large images it only takes a few seconds. I don't archive my images on the laptop - I have several layers of backup.

I also use my desktop - for photo work but especially for writing, I prefer sitting at my desk.

I have a tablet that I thought would be useful for e-mail, but I prefer typing on a real keyboard.

I don't think that laptops or desktops are going anywhere.

I seriously do not think that laptops an desktops ate on the way out. I was looking for a backpack to a 17 inch laptop and the clerk at the store said that they were hard to find. That most of the new backpacks he was getting was were geared to the smaller laptops.

Go into a store and look around it is the cheaper models $450 to $600 that are out on display. To get an Acer Nitro, I had to order it to be able to purchase it--this is a gamer machine and quite the computer. Most people will not pay the price for one a really good computer. And the photography industry is a large strong thriving industry--do you think that companies are going to stop supplying them with computers!!

Thee is no question that there is a diminished demand for laptops, and even more for desktop computers, according to industry analysts. But that does not suggest that they are on their way out. There are far too many individuals and companies that require the larger, better resolution than tablets and smartphones will permit. The market is definitely changing and certainly diminishing. But it will not go away. One of the ways it is changing is not due to lessening demand; it is because so much of the purchasing is done online that stores are no longer providing the array of products on their shelves. That makes it look like the variety is declining, even more.

No, she was shopping in the wrong place and ran into a salesperson who was either ignorant or on commission.

just a thought? i have seen a lot of manufactures producing what they call x100 t.v.s one step up from hd? you can use your t.v as a monitor now with a computer, so who knows where this is all going? ( we used to have slide projectors and screens, now you put a cd in your vcr and use your television?instead!) no set up time? just as with chemical photography! film and enlargers, who needs a darkroom anymore?
