I haven't read all 5 pages, but the 50mm 1.8D is less expensive than the 1.8G. The G has an internal motor whereas the D does not. It will save you quite a bit of money. The D is just as sharp if not sharper.

And yes the versitity of a zoom lens is great but prepare for a higher price tag with large apertures. Also consider the crop factor, Nikon is 1.5X and Canon a 1.6X with an APS-C sensor. Good luck. Happy shooting !

I am ready to get my first "prime lens" and think a 50mm lens would be a good fit for my travel street photography.

Not sure which 50mm lens to get for my Nikon D7000.

Appreciate any advice.

To replicate the field of view of a 50MM lens in 35mm photography, get a 35mm 1.8 lens--new or used from KEH.

Generally speaking, a faster lens, if only by one stop, is going to be quite a bit more expensive, as well as larger and heavier. It will allow you to shoot at a larger aperture, but the image quality might not be as good as with the lens having a smaller maximum aperture.

Read lots of reviews.

Nikon 50mm 1.4 if u can afford, or 50mm 1.8.

As far as the 1.4 vs 1.8, I am amazed that the 1.8 sucks in so much light. The photo is much brighter than the subject.

I don't see the need to go with the 1.4. If you need the extra step, up the ISO.
