I chose a .357, ages ago - thankfully, I've not had to put it to the test.
The folks depicted on TV that hunt 'gators all seem to use .22Mag firearms.
They're looking to put the smallest, least damaging hole in the valuable hide and have the thing right next to the boat on the end of a line so that works. The native hunters in Alaska often carried 222's back then because they were light and cheep and a good hunter could take bunnies or caribou with it. Were I actively engaged in hunting them at close range with no concern for hide value I would pick something a bit bigger. Hard to beat a 12 gauge pump with slugs but if it must be a hand gun than my pick would be an easy to handle 44 Mag Redhawk for close up and this TCA Contender in 375 JDJ for a bit more distance. Your experience may vary. Of course, real experts like our president, for instance, would probably choose something far different.
It makes perfect sense to use whatever resources you have at hand to handle the situation. BTW she my get an endorsement contract with the gun company. :)
