I would try resetting your menu to default and see if that does the fix.
It, (your camera) might be waiting for you to push your BBF button.
Also, check to make sure the camera is set for remote triggering.

What oldtigger said. I believe there's a time limit that the remote option stays active. Also if you turn the camera off between shots or let it go into sleep mode it will default back to remote off.

there must be a reason the camera times out the remote option but for the life of me i can't think of what it might be.

Check your remote on time limit (C5 on my D7100 custom menu) max for me is 15 minutes, but the default may be 5 minutes.

On most remotes, the button functions as the camera's shutter button. If you have moved the focus from the shutter button to a back button and have focus priority set, the camera will not take a picture. Try putting focus back on the shutter button and see what happens.

I don't think that's necessarily true. I've been using BBF for a few years and never had a problem with my Nikon remote.
I think it's more a problem of timing out.
