I have 3 nikor lenses and an 11-16 tokina i just got from BH. is it a good idea to put uv filters on all of them and just leave them on for protection????????? look forward to you guys and gals for advice- Chuck
I never use a lens without a UV filter. It is solid protection and a filter is a whole lot cheaper to replace than the front glass.
thank you so much javadia

If you strive for maximun resolution using filter free cameras and state of the art lenses you most likely won't put a filter infront of the lens, but if you want protection, placing a top of the line filter is acceptable....
I only use uv filter if the situation warrants it. Just as I only wear safety goggles when there is greater risk to the safety of my eyes.

ALL my lenses have a UV or skylight on them. One time a customer brought his camera in. It was on the floor, got caught in the power seat and got a little crunched. We had to use filter wrenches to get the filter off. New filter and he was on his way... (They also protect the front element from scratches.)
Save your money. You want protection, use a lens hood.
I just want to know why people misuse apostrophe's. I find it very annoying. Filters is plural. Filter's is possessive. Thank's.

This question has been asked a million times and the answers have always been the same: some say don't use any filters, others say they are cheap insurance. Try search.

If the lens has a tulip type hood, or a hood that protrudes beyond the glass of the lens, I use that - even indoors. Anytime you add glass in front of your glass, you lose quality. Many people say it is cheep insurance, and that may well be true, as long as you can live with the loss of quality.
Yes. Put "something" - UV, 1-A Skylight, *something* in front of the front lens element. Simple common sense. Leave it there. Just my opinion- since mid 60s. Check images taken. Your options go from appx. $6 to 3 figures. At the very least, Tiffin, Agfa, Polaroid - if only Hoya or such attracts you - get that. What's $80? - less than a new lens - whether a plastic-bayonet kit lens or a "true prime" better-constructed. Screw it on and "fugeddabout it."
Get SOMETHING to protect that front lens element! - Or not. When you buy your next lens - get a filter for it too. Or not.

I have Hoya clear filters on my lenses - just a bit of protection. I attach them with Xume magnetic adapters, so I can put them on and off in less than a second.
