I've bought more than 10 "refurb" lenses over the (many!) years. I buy only FACTORY or RELIABLE vendor lenses.

Manufacturer refurbished lenses usually come with a warranty and are usually refurbished to 'as new' condition. No reason not to consider one.

I purchased a refurbished lens from Nikon recently but had to return it because it had a flaw in the outer element. Nikon agreed to take it back and credited my account for the full amount. It did take a few days to get the RMA and they at first wanted me to pay for the return shipping but that was corrected after a few phone calls and emails. This was not an unpleasant experience but it was time consuming. I have just ordered the same Nikon lens new from B&H for a few hundred dollars more since it was on sale. That is OK with me since It has a five year warranty versus three months with the refurb. I do question the theory that factory refurbs are always inspected before reselling. My refurb direct from Nikon USA was certainly never inspected since the element flaw was easy to see. The flaw appeared to be etching or bubbles in the glass. I do wish it had worked out, after all who doesn't like to save money. I still may try a refurb again since what are the odds that I would get another bad one since so many here have had such good experiences.

My Nikon 16-35 is a factory refurb and I've had no problems at all with it. I buy factory refurb cameras, lens and electronics whenever I can.

A factory refurb. lens can have an added benefit. Often when a lens is having a problem corrected the lens is then rechecked for collimation and function resulting in a lens that is adjusted better than one that just came off the factory production line.

Well, when it comes to flaws and defects not just in individual items but a model itself, Nikon seems to be doing not so well lately! :-(
Case in point? Nikon D600 (sensor oil and grime), D750 -- an advisory and partial recall has been issued from what I hear, and either the D7000 or D7100 also had some sensor issues - much less prevalent than D600, of course.

And I am talking about sparkling new units still smelling like the photo-store they were purchased from!

Quality Control simply is not what it used to be in the pre-Y2K Nikon SLR days!! <LOL>

And, this should not spark another Nikon vs Canon flurries of, "I told you so...!" from the non-Nikon camps! <Haha!>

I've never bought a refurbished lens, but I've bought several used lenses, which are one step down from refurbs. I've never had a problem buying used. They look and perform like new. Refurbs would be just like new, I would think, as are refurbished cameras - my first choice when buying bodies.

That's what I thought when I ordered a refurbished Nikon camera from Nikon and later found out it came with only a 90 day warranty, not one year.

Yes, I purchased a 24-70mm f4 L lens from B&H and it came in brand new condition with a Canon 1 year warranty.
I saved over 300 bucks and it's very sharp. I'm satisfied.

:) :) :)

I buy most of my lenses as refurbs; ususally they are better than new, as they have had a technician go thru' them thoroughly.
