$44 Haier 7" HLT71 monitor review - DSLR FILM NOOB

That Haier is soo tempting. I'm thinking of a monitor to use with an outdoor camera.

EDIT: It's being offered for $100.99, used, on Amazon - from 2009.

I wonder when that NOOB video was made because the Haier is from 2009.

But you still have to get on your hands and knees to see the screen - and in this case he needs to get a new camera. I think the OP is trying to avoid working on his belly and getting up from that position.

The Camranger/DSLR Dashboard/DSLR Controller lets you stand up, look at a phone or tablet at any angle (easily avoiding sun glare and reflections), offers full touch screen control of all camera parameters, includes other features like focus stacking, HDR stacking, time lapse, bracketing, exp comp, white balance adjustments, etc etc etc. While the Camranger costs over $250, the other two are "donation ware" and function just like Camranger. I use the TP Link MR3040 (incidentally the same one Camranger uses), which I paid $30 for, to do wireless camera control, and the OTG cable for wired.

don't tell me to buy a camera with an articulating screen...ready have canon 5Diii and 7Dii....and Iove it :-)

Anyone try a right angle viewing gadget? Any good? Or any other ideas? I also thought about some kind of monitor but probably a pain to walk around with.

Thanks for any ideas

Try canon connect if you have a smart phone or iPad

Thanks Gene51. I already own an iPad & was trying to avoid buying an android tablet. I do have an android phone so maybe this is the best answer. I like the idea of using bigger screen so that's why I was hoping to use ipad.

So it looks like I can use camranger with ipad or dslr controller with android Tablet. Either way I have to pay more ( buy camranger or buy android tablet)

And just so you know, I'm a she not a he. :-)

Have you considered no longer taking shots that require you to lay on the ground?

I use the right-angle finder on my Canon cameras when I would otherwise have to lie on the ground to compose and focus. It also has a magnifier in it to use for checking focus (useful for macro).

I use a waist-level or angle finder, depending upon which camera, and figure that since I have to bend down to place the camera anyway, I might as well take the picture while I'm at it. Never was much at Rube Goldberg impersonations.

You have to get on the ground to use the right angle viewer anyway.

True. But you don't have to lie on the ground. It suffices to kneel on the ground.

I agree with one other response... And I use this with the Canon 6D... get the camera on the ground, and take a "guess" shot... wide angle first. Have a look and make adjustments. This technique doesn't require anything more than a few extra camera shots. I've used this approach with pets and Zoo critters like snakes and lizards... thank goodness for digital so we can immediately see the results, and toss the rejects...

Use a compact mirror to see your screen. I usually keep one in my camera bag's side pocket. Can also be used to bounce flash (or some other strong light source, such as a flashlight) for close-up shots on a subject. If you don't already own a compact mirror, just pick one up at your nearest dollar store; it doesn't need to be a Revlon or Ralph Lauren... unless you're trying to make a fashion statement.

If you go the mirror route, you might want to look at a camping mirror. It is made of polished metal and unbreakable. Compact mirrors are breakable and could be dangerous in a photo bag that gets jostled around as one hikes and climbs.
