I bought a used D700 body with approximately 4200 shutter clicks for around $1200 on Ebay. Super clean. Came with an extra Nikon battery. I got it just as the D750's were hitting the market. Great camera. Sold a D300s and this was on my wish list. Waited for the right deal to come along. Bought a Nikon 50 f/1.8 new for $216 from B&H. Great lens. Very sharp. As everyone else stated, if it is clean and relatively low clicks, go for it!

If the camera is clean and has low miles, and the lens is in good condition - jump on it.

I'm thinking of buying a used d700 with a 50/1.4. Any owners of the d700 that can give me their take on the camera? Is it worth buying it? Price is $700 for the camera and lens...

In and of itself, the D700 is a wonderfully well-made camera. I've not ever had a moment's problem with mine. Having only 12 megapixels isn't necessarily a drawback because the quality of those pixels is really good -- especially shines in low-light shooting. Having said that, note that newer Nikon models have been getting progressively better in that department, even some of the APS-C ones. So far the only other Nikon I'd like to try besides my D700 is the D800e, but that just reflects my preferences for what photography I like to do. I'll probably never be able to afford upgrading which is okay so long as the D700 keeps clickin'. (I also have the 50/1.4 and also like & recommend it).

I think condition considerations are paramount -- no. of exposures it has already made (shutter count), how it was used, etc., and of course don't rule out the cost you might incur if you want to have Nikon (or another totally reliable place, see other UHH threads) service the camera just to make sure it is okay.

Love my D700. With the vertical grip and AA batteries you get 8fps. It's solid but check the rubber, they have a tendency to come lose.

The owner has not replied (Craigslist). I'll still look for a D700... Thanks to all!

I was just looking at used D700 and average price is $950.

Yes it is a very fine camera indeed, but now that the D750 is out, I would spring for that, as that is by far a superior camera and for what it offers, it is cheap as well!

I have owned one since Oct.31 and yes it is a great camera. Just got it back for the flair problem and Nikon up dated the firm ware in it. I can't say enough about the camera. The d700 was also a very good camera. I was looking at used ones today. Here's a shot to look at.

I have a Nikon D700 and love it. I think it is the last of the well made nikons. Just works and works well. I have had no desire to upgrade since I got this as it does everything I ask of it.

I loved my D700. I sold it to a member here at UHH in excellent condition for $1000.00 or so. It took great images.

I recently sold my d700 for about twice that, no lens, but with nikon grip and extra batteries. 18k auctions. If that d700 camera has low to medium clicks, and is clean, grab it. The camera us superb. I just needed higher MP for what I shoot. 12 mP on the d700 is still adequate for many photo situations. It's one of the best cameras made in that MP range.

Whoa - you didn't mention that this was a Craigslist deal. While I would have been in with those praising the D700 and that price, now that I hear where the seller is lurking, I would tell you to run like hell. Nothing changed about the quality of the camera; what changed is that I would have serious doubts about the seller.

If you want a D700, buy from someone you know or you can gather details about or just go to KEH, B&H etc and buy with confidence.

Not everyone on CL us a crook or con. I sold my d700 on CL for a profit, and it was an honest ad with full disclosure.
The buyer was a decent guy. The transaction was safe and successful. Don't discount CL. Just do your due diligence thoroughly.

Great camera, I've read and reread Tom Hogan's book on the D700 and it's a great help/reference.
Great previous advice posted.
And just a note "Auto Gain" under multiple Exposure make sure it is off when shooting manual and low light it can cause quite the headache, I know.

well if you read a little deeper in hogans take on camera's . you will find the d700 was a great camera in it's day, a real work horse , and indestructible . but he says it's old teckknowledge now if he had to choose now between a d700 . ff and a D 5500 . he says he would take d5500 dx because it's light years ahead in electronics and picture wise he says the dx 5500 or it may have been the d5300 dx is just as good if not better . but if you can find
a d700 cheap and that's not cheap it's the going price he even said the d7100
would be his pick over a d700
