I have a D700 (and its DX companion-D300s) which I use for landscape, scenic, events, etc. I have looked at more current bodies and decided that they'll have to pry these 2 bodies out of my cold dead hands. 12mp gives me clean enlargements up to 20"x30" and no one has walked away from a purchase because of my cameras. Excellent in low light and very good at dealing with high ISO. my 50mm f/1.4 AF-D is a dream at bokeh! Next best is the 105mm f/2.8 AF-D.

I think you saw a d7000 which Best Buy was trying to dump from stock around Christmas time. That would also explain the 18-135 DX lens you referenced.

I have been wanting to get a new camera for a while now. I currently use the D700 and have always gotten great results with it. The reason I have not upgraded yet is that when I compare my shots with my wife's shoots using her d800, I really can't tell much difference for the extra money involved. Therefor I am seriously thinking of buying the D7100 and utilizing the dx lenses I have and wait until the d800e's or the d810's prices go down. Having the D700 and the d7100 might be a very good combination to have. However I will not get rid of my d700 for any reason I can foresee.

this camera is also great for low-light conditions since the pixel size is larger

Which 50mm 1.4? That is an awesome lens if its Nikon, even the old one with the aperture ring is great.

If the click count is low and the body is in good shape go for it.

Vallipride..... What are your thoughts on the 810, coming from the 700? Would love to do the same, but cost justification for an amateur hobbyist is tough.

The owner has not replied (Craigslist). I'll still look for a D700... Thanks to all!

Whoa - you didn't mention that this was a Craigslist deal. While I would have been in with those praising the D700 and that price, now that I hear where the seller is lurking, I would tell you to run like hell. Nothing changed about the quality of the camera; what changed is that I would have serious doubts about the seller.

If you want a D700, buy from someone you know or you can gather details about or just go to KEH, B&H etc and buy with confidence.

I think you're talking about the d7000 (he's considering through d700) because Best Buy would not carry a camera that was discontinued in 2012.

I do agree that Craigslist is a place to be careful. I love my 700 and on Craigslist I would ask questions and take test shots but I don't think I would reject it out of hand. A test shot can get you clicks (shutter actuations)at http://www.shutteractuations.com/ among others. Just upload a test shot.

I would reject it out of hand. Stolen? Gray market? Abused?

Modern gear is too complicated to evaluate in 5 minutes in a Starbuck's parking lot. I never quite understood the thinking that it is better to buy from a total stranger in an attempt to get a 'good" deal than from a reputable seller. I am sure that there may be an occasional true diamond in the rough through CL, but if the deal seems to good to be true.......

You willing to risk the $? Google PT Barnum's famous quote.

If it's in decent condition, you won't be disappointed. I say go for it.
