I'm thinking of buying a used d700 with a 50/1.4. Any owners of the d700 that can give me their take on the camera? Is it worth buying it? Price is $700 for the camera and lens...

I LOVE my D700.... wonderful camera. As for price, I guess check on click count and ask someone who knows if that is a deal or not.

If the camera is clean and has low miles, and the lens is in good condition - jump on it.

i have the d700 and use it for studio type work mostly portraits..it is a great camera and for that price i would say if the shutter count is reasonable then go for it..

D700 is old technology, a great camera but I think there are better options.

Great camera, I have one with 35,000 clicks , I just bought the D810, and my 700 is always my back up, ready to go reliable camera. The price sounds good, figure $500 for the camera $200 lens. I went to trade mine in last month was offered $350 for my camera, I not so politely gave a remark, what is the click #

In my opinion the D700 is the sweet spot for 12MP. Just used mine last night to photograph a Japanese Blue Grass band called Pirate Canoe. They were quite good. Buy the camera if it has no problems. The lens is a good choice too.

As everyone has affirmed, the D700 is still a great camera. If the shutter activations are reasonably low, you will be very satisfied with the purchase.

I just sold my D700 and I can tell you, that is a great price for a great camera. If clicks are under 40k, I would buy it. The price has dropped on these since the D750 came out. I took a loss, but not to the tune of $700!

Great camera, I've read and reread Tom Hogan's book on the D700 and it's a great help/reference.
Great previous advice posted.
And just a note "Auto Gain" under multiple Exposure make sure it is off when shooting manual and low light it can cause quite the headache, I know.

The owner has not replied (Craigslist). I'll still look for a D700... Thanks to all!

It's a wonderful camera. If it's clean and the shutter count is reasonable, and you do a face to face purchase, I'd jump on it.
