Captures a sandhill crane turning her egg in a jungle setting in
central Florida. Notice how close nest and egg are to water level.

That's a terrific behavioral/environment image.

Not surprised the nest is so close to water - they roost in water over night to keep themselves relatively safe from predators.

Allen,

Our backyard is next to this jungle. We have seen bobcats, wild pigs, otters, etc. I am surprised that it is a safe place for a nest. Perhaps it is the long beak...

Since it's so close, you should keep monitoring the nest to see if a chick hatches - sounds like a rough neighborhood for cranes.

Very nice pictures and thanks for sharing. FYI, I used to live in the Watergate condos in Alexandria, VA off of Duke St. for years.

Thanks, will do. She was again turning her egg today with the male (?) standing near. Didn't have my camera.

I moved from Montebello to the Watergate. :-) Small world, isn't it? ;-)
I can remember many a day catching the Metro for work at the Huntington exit when it was the end of the yellow line. This was in the late 80's, if memory serves me. :-)

Your memory is correct. Still last station and end of Yellow line; and people are still catching the trains.

Great picture. I'd sure like to see the chick if the egg hatches.

I thought the yellow line was extended to Springfield and beyond. Oh well. I need to make a trip back there and catch up. One of my biggest complaints is that there is always construction and traffic that drive me crazy.
