No thanks. I have been suffering lately in the upper 70s but someone has to do it. Average -30f? No way.
Why would anyone want to live in such miserable weather,
just hard to fathom.

You can bet they didn't move there. :D
Demotion at work, maybe? :D
IMO it would be no worse than spending a summer along the gulf coast. Dam heat and humidity is unbearable but then I don't like HOT weather.
Interesting series of photos, Jerry. Far beyond my level of motivation!!!

I can't imagine how or why they can keep that place supplied with everything they need - like all kinds of fuel.

Just think, people lived there before the 20th century.

The only flaw in this report is the population figure. Not sure where they got 300K people but they sure as hell aren't in Omyakon.
Other web sites list the town's permanent pop as around 500, which seems a bit more likely. There's no way in hell 300,000 people could live in that place.
But it IS cold.

I was wondering the same thing when it said that little general store provided all the supplies for the town.
Many of the residents began their lives there via their government who wanted to get rid of them. Once there, they realize they can live life out without any one bothering them. So life there becomes desirable. Without fresh fruits and vegetables I can imagine the condition of their colons but with low temperatures, long life is probably the fare over an early demise.
If you take a 5 gallon bucket and add a toilet seat to it, you have a facility to use during the night. In the morning you take it outside and dump it. If you add something to take away the smell, life isn't all that bad. I lived in the Colorado high country and knew of several people who did not have indoor plumbing due to cold weather. They used the bucket principal. There is a fluid (I forget the name) that can be used as an anti-freeze. It's good to 50 below. If you use the bucket, a gallon of windshield fluid goes a long way.
Makes this morning's temperature of -20 seem almost balmy by comparison. Although anything beyond -20 doesn't feel that much worse. Dressing for -30 or -40 is not all that different from dressing for -20.
I wouldn't live Boston, but plenty of people are doing it.
