I recently purchased the 5D mk III and I am looking for a an ultra wide lens for the full frame format. I honed in on the Canon 16-35 f4.0 IS, but now Tamron is eminent with a 15-30 F2.8 also with IS that appears to rival the Nikon. Then throw in the soon to be Canon 14-24 F2.8, pricey but delicious, and I go off the deep end. Does anybody have some morsels of experience to throw on this plate in front of me. The only thing I know for sure is I have a headache!!! By the way, I shoot surf/oceanscapes, portraits when I can find someone to sit for me other than my dogs, and would really like to try some street/urban stuff. Thank You in advance for any help you may have.

Don't forget the 16-35 F/2.8. I purchased an older model for $650 and love it.

You can't go wrong with the 16-35 f/4 has better sharpness and resolution than the f/2.8. They say that the Tokina 16-28 is pretty amazing for less than 1/2 the price. Tamron seems like it might be special but I have yet to see any reviews on it were they have performed the tests that will tell the full story. Shooting the milky way would be better with one of the faster lenses. Twice as much light gathering. I have the new Sigma 12-24 that is amazingly wide but IQ is just a bit better than the 17-40.... and it is slow, think I am going to back it up with a Samyang 14mm f/2.8

Hey, Canon's 15 to 85mm is a good all around lens at reasonable price.

Canon's 15-85 is an EF-S lens. Won't work on the 5DIII.

I have the EF16-35mm f/4 L that I use primarily on my 6D. Hard to beat for landscapes, street shots, etc. Excellent image quality. Very well built. I've done interior shots of ships and submarines with it, with a flash, of course. Excellent results.

SS, you aren't using it efficiently then.
Sounds to me like you are taking your shots from eye level without bending the back.
You are using it with the wrong mindset.
Ultrawides as a landscape lens aren't for "getting it all in".
They are for getting down and dirty with strong foregrounds.

Lighthouse, I agree!
I haven't shot eye-level since I was 6 years old!!

If you have a nearby dealer who carries these. Buy each with the option to return if not satisfactory. You're agonizing over minor differences.

I have the Canon 16-35 f4 and love it for travel. Shooting church/temple interiors works really well, although there is the expected distortion when you are all-the-way wide. But it's really sharp.

It is a great lens, but OP is using a 5D3. the 15-85 is an EF-s lena built for APS-c (crop) cameras.

Filters?
No, Wait for the new Canon or get the new Tammy 15-30

Yes, the Canon 16-35....printing large get the F4 (it tests sharper) shooting the night sky get the F2.8

http://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Compare/Side-by-side/Canon-EF-16-35mm-F4L-IS-USM-on-Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-III-versus-EF16-35mm-F2.8L-II-USM-on-Canon-EOS-1Ds-Mark-III___1367_795_220_436

Just to confuse the issue the Tokina AT-X 16-28 tests as sharp as the 16-35 F4, and it is a 2.8.....but filters are a pain

^
This answer covers the important basics of the issue. Both the Canon and the Tamron are sharp lenses, so IQ won't be an issue there. The question is: Do YOU want to use circular filters easily? If so, get the Canon. If later on you want to do star photography ADD the Tokina 16-28 2.8. It does flare in the sun but not the stars.
