Hooray! I finally got my wife's permission to trade my 28-300 lens in on this new one that's on special right now. Looking forward to the new long lens. Does anyone have any experience with the Nikkor 80-400mm? Sharing some photos would be nice.

Wow, I've read wonderful things about that lens. I think you are going to love it. The 28-300 is a nice lens. I owned one for a while. I traded mine in for a 70-200 f/2.8 D series lens. That is the one that does not have VR and does not cost $2400.00.

I got mine this fall and love it! I traded the older 80-400 in. It is 100% better in every way. And I put the 1.4 and the 1.7 TC's on it and it still focus's pretty fast and is still sharp. I wish spring and the birds would hurry up and get here.:):)
Well, I'm jealous!! Enjoy! I'm betting you'll love it. Moose Peterson (Google him) has a web site and he has used this lens a lot. In fact, he states that in all his shoots, he doesn't leave home without this lens.
I have the older model and have been using it with great success for birding. See some shots attached.

Wow, those are nice shots. Thanks for sharing.
How much did you get for the trade in, I have the older model. Did you use B&H?

I have the new 80-400 MM lens. I love it. If you have a camera which has a DX element rather than an FX element, you will end up with a 600 MM photo. (crop factor of around 1.5 X) This lens is heavy, so invest in a tripod or monopod. Also "Quick release plates" to attach and release the lens from your 'pod. Auto focus is quick, photos are sharper too. Enjoy your new lens.
I have the new Nikon 80-400mm lens. It's a fantastic lens. The autofocus is very fast. With my camera in 3D tracking mode I've been able to track birds as small as terns in flight. I really think the Nano crystal coating on the glass gives it slightly more contrast than standard multi coatings. Here's one of the terns I photographed at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. They were diving into the water to get small fish. They're pretty fast but the lens kept up.

It's a very good lens--Here's a shot from last year on a D800:

Taken with the older version...you will love the new one and you can use the Nikon 1.4 TC with it, unlike my older model. Have fun!
