If your judgement of your distance is accurate, you were shooting at less than the minimum focusing distance of that lens. It's MFD is 1.8 meters (5.9 feet). I recently returned a 7DII due to inconsistent auto focusing. I have read a number of customer reviews that were complaining of focus issues. Hope you achieve resolution to your issues!

You are thinking of the Mk I version of this lens. This version, the Mk II has an MFD of 3.2'. This camera has shown some possibly inconsistent focusing, but I am not sure at this point if it is me or the camera. Been too darn cold to go outside and do much with it yet!

Especially hard when shooting wide open with thin DOF. Also hard when using max zoom at close distance. Just a quarter of an inch focus, front or back, can make or break.

You might be right about getting outside and shooting with it. Inside with max zooms most often yield less than desirable results for me.

I.f you look carefully the right side of the kitty.s face( the right side if the picture but actually the cat's left side) is dead on but the other side is soft. I don't think it's a focus problem, it's a DOF issue Unavoidable at the current settings

I agree about DOF, but the focus point was the eye so if the area to the cat's left is in better focus then I probably compensated for the len's back focus a slight bit too much, since that area is closer then the eye. I did a rather quick and somewhat crude adjustment, but I seem to have gotten it fairly close. I'll play with it some more just to satisfy myself, although it probably won't make much difference in the long run.

I think the shot over all is good. It seems to have a sharper focus on the nose tip and upper portion of the nose at the brow line. I have found this to some times be caused by having the camera on continuous auto focus and some hand shake.
I put the photo in Photoshop elements and put a high pass filter on it and I think it sharpened it up even just a tad more . here is your photo with the adjustment . hope you like it .

Just did a quick focus adjustment on my EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L II and my 7DII. This photo was taken at 400mm at a distance of about 4 ft. or so. Not sure I'm totally satisfied with it. Would appreciate opinions. Wanted to post a shot at longer range but it is snowing outside and not the best conditions for a longer shot. Was also going to do a 100mm shot, but the cat didn't cooperate! Shot at f/5.6

Thanks! Actually, I was inside and the cat was outside. Got the shot before my wife started yelling about the open window! :-D

Thank You! The eye, which was my focal point, definitely looks sharper.

I think that you've done the best possible. My DOF calculator reports a depth of field of 2.1 millimeters ( 0.08 inches) when shooting at f5.6 at 400mm and at 4ft from the subject. Even f16 at that distance would only yield a 6mm depth of field. (1/4 inch)

It might be that the area that is beyond the sharp focus plane is made more noticeable due to the strong lighting on that side of the cat's face.

I don't think we are ever satisfied with our own photos are we. That's what makes it so interesting, always trying to improve.
There is nothing wrong with this photo, it's as sharp as they come.
