Although I'm not working from a laptop at this time, I have operated two monitors from my desktop for at least a decade now. I don't know how I could function effectively with only one monitor.

Hello fellow Hogs. I have a Dell Vostro 1510 laptop with a color-Munki calibrated monitor. I have the chance to pick up a (free) Dell external monitor. Any utility in having 2 in your opinion(s)?
I love working with two monitors... Am considering going to 4....
I use two monitors on my desktop It is advantageous especially with Photoshop I have all the panels that I use on the second monitor and a a full screen to use making my adjustments

In answer to your question, Yes there is an advantage in having two monitors. Don't let any one tell you there is not, if they have never tried two. I have a two monitor set up, both work independent from each other the screen resolution can be different on either . I use one as work in progress (Lightrooom) the other has work in progress ( Photoshop) at the same time. One has my desk top showing the other has my email on it etc. Easy to set up as long as your computer has HDMI , you just need a cable. not expensive to do either. I watch videos on you tube on how to use Photoshop etc on my no 1 screen while I actually follow the video on my own images in Photoshop etc on my no 2 screen. I would never go back to one screen now. As long as your computer has enough power and memory go for it.
Washy
Forgot, color monki both screens and set brightness/ contrast to your satisfaction on both as well

And being able to drag things back and forth from one to the other. It works particularly well if you have multiple programs open like I do so I can work with both fluidly.
But one finally died. And I'm cramped in one display.
So I'm being "forced" to change my ways.
Long I have wanted one large display on the back wall of my Desks hutch.
Something large enough to open various windows, size them or quadrant them.
So for my birthday, a 34" monitor is going to replace the dual set up.
The only thing that bugged me about dual was the frames in the center. But otherwise, display real estate is something you can't have too much of.

Thanks Sonny...I went for it.

Multiple monitors are fantastic and provide so much more freedom and efficiency. I actually use 2 computers on my desk, each with two 24" monitors, and sometimes even yet a laptop at the side, all arranged in a slightly semi-circular fashion on my desk. On the main computer with 2 monitors, I work on the pictures, the peripheral computers provide me with extra information such as google searches and maps when I work on captions of travel photography or need to look up a technical aspect of for instance Lightroom which I am still learning, at the same time I can still see my e-mail in-box, all without having to skip from tab to tab.
Right now, one of the monitors died, still have 3 going and I feel already hampered by it - luckily I will replace it tomorrow with a 27" monitor and am really looking forward to that. Take it, you will love the improved flexibility!

It could be. I've seen several setups where the Windows desktop is diplayed on one monitor and the programs open on another monitor but I have no idea where you stick another video card in a laptop and I doubt the Dell monitor would be as good as the calibrated one in the laptop so I will leave this one to someone who knows.
Me, I would take it anyway. You never know when you might need it.
When you use a docking station with a laptop is where you get the 2 video outputs.

Thanks Jin. I hadn't figured that out yet.

Most Laptops have an external via port and in internal 2nd graphics card already built in. I have many laptops and they all are used with 2nd screens at times. Been using dual monitors since the DOS days. Love the extra screen real estate.
