I live in and do a lot of shooting in NYC. My travel light outfit is a Nikon D5200 (19.5 oz.), Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 (18.2 oz.), and Sigma 18-200 Macro OS HSM (15.2 oz.). Altogether that's 3.3 pounds plus the bag, an extra battery, a lens pen, a microfiber cloth, and a few index cards and pencil to take notes.

I didn't get a chance to finish before. My point is that the Canon SL1 along with a lens like the 18-135 IS or an all-in-one is not that heavy and covers most situations you'll encounter in a city. Add an ultrawide like a Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6, Tokina 11-16 f/2.8, or the lightweight Canon 10-18 and you're covered for just about everything.

I would also bring a good compact for the times that you don't want to carry the DSLR.

i find the 24x70 range quite adequate and since it is a 20 mp camera if you need to get closer you can use the digital zoom and/or crop the photo quite nicely. On my fullframe the lens I have on it 99% of the time is the 24x70. Also this lens is a 1.8 to 2.8 so great for lowlight too.

I have the Sony RX 100 III and like it a lot. Great view finder. Only problem for you maybe the reach as it only goes out 70mm. battery life has been good. View finder only comes on when you get you eye close to it.

Hi. I am shopping for a small, lightweight camera to take to Italy in April. On previous travel camera posts, I didn't see anything about the Canon Rebel SL1. I also know that the SL2 may be released soon. I am holding out to see if that materializes, but does anyone have experience with this camera? I must have a viewfinder and I am most concerned with image quality and battery life. The Sony RX100 III looks good, too but I am used to DSLR and having some of its flexible options. Any commentary would be appreciated!
Hi. I am shopping for a small, lightweight camera ... (show quote)

I have both the SL1 and the Sony RX100 II. They make a great camera stable. Have also aquired the Tamron16-300 mm lens which gives me an equivalent 24-450 mm range. For a trip like Italy I'd take the SL1 and Tamron combo for flexibility in composition and range. I'd invest in a spare battery. A 16GB Sandisk card gives me 634 shots in RAW (my preference) and 2177 L JPGs. The Sony RX100 II also takes great photos (RAW and JPG) and is a true pocket camera although I carry it, a spare battery and an SD card in a tiny bag. Enjoy your trip!

Appreciate your response. I've been waiting to see if the SL1 will be coming out with a new model. Apparently there was a production issue otherwise it would have been out late last year. I think that I may just take that little Sony for the sake of convenience. My objective is not to get great photos to enlarge but to document my trip and take some reference photos for painting which is really my main focus (as apposed to photography) although I do love photography and usually take a lot of photos. I have a creative eye but can be weak on the technical aspects. Thanks again for the advice!

Have you held an SL1 before?

I found the controls to be very cramped, unlike my smaller EM1. All the buttons just feel like they are in the right spot...and pretty much every button can be reprogrammed to another function.

Yes I have held it and tried some of the features. I have very small hands and it is not a problem for me.

You should try one of the mirrorless models like the a6000, em5ii, em1, xt1...might fit even better.
