Hello fellow Hogs. I have a Dell Vostro 1510 laptop with a color-Munki calibrated monitor. I have the chance to pick up a (free) Dell external monitor. Any utility in having 2 in your opinion(s)?
It could be. I've seen several setups where the Windows desktop is diplayed on one monitor and the programs open on another monitor but I have no idea where you stick another video card in a laptop and I doubt the Dell monitor would be as good as the calibrated one in the laptop so I will leave this one to someone who knows.
Me, I would take it anyway. You never know when you might need it.

If into processing photos
Thanks Mike. I think I will. My Scottish ancestors would spin in their graves if I turned down a "freebie"
having dual monitors is a wonderful thing!
Don't think so Steve
Thanks

Yes, 2 monitors! Most cheap Dells I've seen are not too bad (provided they work at all!). In fact, I end up doing a good share of photo and graphics work on one since it is my main "Desktop" screen, and have not really worried too much about calibration because everybody's photos look pretty darn good on it - every bit as good as my Macbook retina, imo (but I have never been a "calibrationist" anyway ;) ) I got my Dell 17" for $20 at an office surplus sale, have been using it constantly for 4 years - a very good deal.

I have had dual displays for a long time. I loved having them!
And being able to drag things back and forth from one to the other. It works particularly well if you have multiple programs open like I do so I can work with both fluidly.
But one finally died. And I'm cramped in one display.
So I'm being "forced" to change my ways.
Long I have wanted one large display on the back wall of my Desks hutch.
Something large enough to open various windows, size them or quadrant them.
So for my birthday, a 34" monitor is going to replace the dual set up.
The only thing that bugged me about dual was the frames in the center. But otherwise, display real estate is something you can't have too much of.

I use two displays. Both Lightroom and Photoshop are 2 display capable. I have the full screen editor on one, and the other "stuff" on the other. I feel claustrophobic when I have to work on a single monitor.
Besides, the price is right. Hopefully the second display has greater bit depth and wider color gamut to be able to use it as your primary screen.-
