An interesting Winter and a personal attempt to determine if these new supper zooms are any good. Loving photography as I do and really wanting to know if these two new bad boys were any good, I spent a little gold, rented the Tamron and Sigma 150-600 lenses and gave them a go. In the meantime I was using the setup I own, the Nikkor 300mm f/4 (non VR) + 1.4x Nikkor TC. I was pleasantly surprised by both the Tamron and the Sigma. I also realized my Nikkor 420mm setup is also as good. Now I should add that I have a friend that has the new Canon 600mm f/4. And as much as I was very pleased with my results with these new lenses. His photos with the 600mm prime are clearly better. This should not come as a surprise, right?
So here I am, in a pickle, trying to decide quite what to do. One additional vexing problem is the new Nikkor 300mm f/4 VR. It's small enough to hike with. That makes telephoto available while hiking well away from the car. So it leaves me pretty much un-decided.
Meanwhile here are some photos, from the three lenses, Tamron, Sigma, and 300mm + 1.4x.

They're all so beautiful and artistic I can't pick one that is more or less sharp or true to the shot. What I want to know is, did any of them get Post Processed???

I saw the new 80-400 in the flesh down at Whitewater Draw in AZ, but I've never handled it. I may reconsider it, or may rent it as I did the two 150-600's and see what I can figure out. What I keep wanting is something with the clarity/contrast/sharpness of a prime. Take a look at imagemeister's photo of a Sandhill Crane, taken with a non IS Canon 300mm f/2.8 (page 2 of this thread). That is the standard to aim for. Can it be gotten with a zoom? I can say clearly, "almost". Now which almost will I actually acquire...

There was a time when a prime lenses always outdid a zoom, telephoto. With the newer zoom lenses some of them are coming awfully close to being prime quality. A lot depends on what you were willing to settle for and if you are professional or not. Not to mention as to whether you had the money to buy a large prime lens, which are very expensive. Another advantage professional have over us amateurs. They can claim them as a business expense, we can not.

I own a couple of zooms that I honestly can't tell the difference. Then again, I'm not blowing my photos up to wall size

The wife and I shoot both the tamron 150-600 on a d7100 and she shoots the older Sigma 150-500 on a d5200 body...we always shoot hand held.

The Sigma seems to focus faster for BIF

Both lenses with that weight take some getting used to...

Its just like everything else...practice practice...

If you want definitive results of what the tamron can do...check the posts from Regis in Idaho

I didn't want to hijack your post, so I posted some photos in the analysis page under First outing with my new 150-600 lens. I'd appreciate your thoughts on them. I wanted more reach than my 16-300 and from everything I read, decided for half the cost of the other lenses, the Tammy would fit my needs.

Sorry, looks like I posted in the wrong spot. They should have been moved to the Photo Gallery section by now. Thanks in advance

I'm going to be renting both the Sigma and Tamron to see how they go this summer. I do have an 80-400mm for my Nikons that I like, however, would like a little further reach.

I think it comes down to how much you're willing to spend or how desperate you are for that little bit the Sigma can bring in.
I opted for the Tamron 150-600mm. The Nikon 300mm of course is a Prime single focal length Lens. which is slightly better (maybe) than the other 2. Hello $5,899.95

I believe that's for the f/2.8. The OP is comparing the f/4, about $2K.

The $1000 Sigma Contemorary lens will also have the Dock - IF - it ever materializes !

Like a lot of us on here, I'm waiting on the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary. The Tamron looks really good, but i had the 150-500 Sigma and i liked it a lot, pretty sharp and pretty quick focusing considering the aperture. There's one thing that we all need to be concerned about though, more than the cost of the lens i think. If those Birds ever figure out how much we spend on getting their photo, they're gonna start charging us for them.

Since you mentioned it, Tom...
My Humming Bird feeders do go down pretty fast at times. And the hotter it gets, the higher the ransom...

Hi Scott. Yes it is the new one! I traded in my old one in on it. It is twice the lens as the older one. Tack sharp and the focus will scare you it is so fast. A little slower with the TC on it. But still awesome pictures! A little pricey. but what a great walk around lens in the woods. You can go from 80 to 400 and get most of what you need for a walk around lens!

Is that the newer model 80-400 Erv ? I have the older model & I also have the older MF Nikkor 400mm 5.6 EDIF... Don't use super tele's much as my focus (pun intended) is macro...

I am not sure that there is a real reason to be waiting for the Sigma contemporary. I'm not so sure it will be any better than the Tamron, which don't get me wrong, for the money is not a bad lens. I purchased the sport and very pleased with it. It is a little sharper than the Tamron but not by much. It is much better constructed and being weatherproof made it worth the extra money to me. I also noticed that the Sigma focus is much quicker. Maybe they contemporary will also? Then again I spend a lot of time outside often in bad weather.

Pricewise, I think the Tamron and the Sigma contemporary are going to be almost identical. I believe Sigma is producing that lens to be compared to the Tamron head-on and would expect there to not be a lot of differences in the two lenses.
