Today I figured it would be a good day to make a list of my camera gear. I have a lot of this stuff and do not always remember what I have. And for insurance it is also good to have a list with some basic info and serial numbers.

So I started with my lenses. And I am already at lens number 45 in my collection and about half way through. Will be interesting to see on which side of 100 lenses I will stop counting.

Is this typical for you folks here on UHH, to have that much of camera gear?

Be careful. To paraphrase a friend of mine (who made this statement relative to guns), "If you know how many you have it isn't enough!"

I once counted the tires and batteries I own and was depressed for days.

I have about five Nikons, two Hasselblads, one Sinar view camera, three digital cinema cameras, and about four movie (film) cameras so far. Lots of lenses for each not worth the counting, but worth the looks they give. Cameras, though, are about 40 percent of the story, as the rest is in lighting. How many thousands of watt-seconds do you have? How much fluorescent, how much LED, how much HMI, etc. And then, of course, there's grip equipment...

I had a thought. In 1944 and 1945 my father, an aerial photographer was in charge of Paiute Field in Texas where his subordinates installed cameras in Bombers. The purpose was to shoot pictures of the damage so they would not have to run recon planes over areas they had bombed already. After VJ day, the order came own to destroy the cameras. My dad, a staff sergeant, said those were the hardest orders he ever got and he watched as the stuff was dumped in the ditch and the soil was pushed over it with bulldozers.

I have an aversion to getting rid of optics.

Have a wonderful Super Multi Coated Tak 35/3.5 that I used on my crop body, thought that I would never let it go because out of all my Taks including the 35/2 this was by far my best lens.... Won't work with my new 6D... probably going to sell it, also have a couple of very interesting Tele Tak presets and a few old Vivitars, my old Series 1, 70-210 has better IQ than my Canon 70-300 IS across the same focal range.

To answer the OP's question I generally have a couple of bodies and about plus or minus 20 lenses, 6 or 7 contemporary lenses and 15 or so old manual lenses. As far as the old manual lenses go I am always buying and selling those lenses, am getting ready to convert an old Minolta Rokkor PF 58mm f/1.4 to a Canon mount. It is a lot of work but that is a really fine lens and worth the effort, I find it to be of higher IQ than the infamous Takumar 50/1.4. It is one of two Minolta lenses that can be milled so that it will register infinity focus on a Canon body, the other is the 58mm f/1.2, same lens a full stop faster.

Have you ever tried the 8 element 50 1.4 Takumar ?? Thanks ....

If you have more than 10 lenses, your focal lengths become extremely redundant.

Not necessarily. I have sold cameras & lenses many times, but most everything I have is for a reason. My 5Dlll is used for portraits, landscapes, grandchildren indoors& some wildlife. I have lenses that I use with it. My 7Dll is for more distant & faster moving sports & wildlife like birds. I have lenses that I use with it. My little 100D is for when I want a DSLR, but want to travel light, like theme parks withe the grandchildren. I have lenses for that. Some of my lenses are for special circumstances, like the 100 macro or 50 1.2. Sometimes When I go on a trip with my husband, I give him one camera to use & he needs lenses. There are a few I have that I am testing to see which I will keep. With the warmer weather coming I will get a chance to do that. Bab

Hello there, I wish I could afford that many gear. At the moment I'm happily married and satisfied with my Nikon D7100 and a Nikon D610 plus 7 lenses, so far so good they all serve my purposes, I enjoy each of one of them.
