Does any one know about Canons new 50.6mp camera. The new Canon 5Ds! And the Canon 5Ds R. They also introduced a new lens! The Canon 11-24mm 1:4L USM!
Finally! Canon has the highest mp camera!

Yes, overkill and way too much money unless you are making money from your work of course. :)

Looks like you are about the last one to hear of those cameras. We have been discussing them in many topics here on the UHH for couple of weeks now.

The new 5Ds is a great camera. That is easy to see when you look at pic samples taken with it. But we also see that the price range of compatible lenses from Canon for those cameras is $2000 and upwards. On the other hand you can live with a lot fewer lenses using this camera because of the 1.4 and 1.6 crop factors that give you up to 20 megapixel pictures at max crop. That is as big and dense picture as you could get with the old 5dmiii at full size without any crop at all. So you can use your sensor and f.x. up to 400 mm lenses and still get the reach of about 600 mm when compared to the 5dmiii. So many can actually save money on this camera and travel lighter.

Considering all this, this camera is not overkill by any means, but a bargain for photographers.

The 5Ds costs only $3.699 which is only marginally more than you pay for 5dmiii which is only less than half this new camera in many ways. So I think Canon users will be buying this new line of cameras in record numbers this year and next year.

That is not totally true. The new Olympus E-M5 Mark II actually produces a 64 mp RAW file in its 40 mp high resolution shooting mode. The 40 mp file in that mode is a JPEG file.

It is not the full truth to say that Hasselblad has a 200 megapixel camera. Because it has only 50 megapixel sensor and uses a internal motor to shift the sensor between taking pictures and then takes six 50 megapixel pictures and combine them into one. So it is more of a new shifting/stitching technology integrated into a camera than a 200 megapixel camera.

I haven't been on UHH for a few days so I must have missed all the topics. What do you mean about the lenses? Can it not use all EF lenses?

Some links thru Canonrumors.com say that all EF lenses are compatible, but only the latest version of the L lenses will have the resolution to "fully utilize" the 50 MP.

Well, by looking at some sample photos at canon websites it is quite clear that lenses that match those new bodies are the lenses in the price range of $2000 and upwards. There are 2 pics taken with 16-35 f4 and 24-70 f4 that are mostly quite soft and that just indicates that those sub $2000 lenses are not suitable for this line of cameras. But all the other and more expensive lenses they used for the sample photos are delivering very nice photos with those new camera bodies.

Yes I've seen a few advertisements on them. But do I really need 50.6mp? And for what? A bigger SD cards may be? Will I need newer lens? Will my computer be able to download all that information at the same speed? WOW! 50.6 mega pixels.

I think he means that if you use the crop function in the camera, you still have approx 20+ MP, which is probably all most photogs need.
