If you want details of the moon, you need to focus on the moon, but then you most likely loose the tree branches, best scenario is to get a good exposure and detailed image of a moon and one of the tree branches and later combine the two. That is what I did in the pic below.

This is the only way to do it. Good job.

But...
The end result, while visually pleasing, is actually manufactured.

Question for speters: In his/her reply he/she said: "If you want details of the moon, you need to focus on the moon, but then you most likely loose the tree branches, best scenario is to get a good exposure and detailed image of a moon and one of the tree branches and later combine the two. Do I understand this correctly that you took two pictures from exactly the same spot. One with the moon in focus, and the other with the branches in focus, and then combined them?

Lemme guess... spelling isn't one of your strong suites, Pinenutz?

Have fun.
I was going through my montage of Moon Shots looking for Super Moon and shooting with trees, clouds, and wonderful sights.
It was gorgeous! Haven't found it yet, if I kept any of them at all. I don't keep OoF pictures.
But I don't believe in pasting together a bunch of exposures. I want what I saw.
YMMV.

Dr. Harold Dross, Jr.'s natural pictures are of appeal to me.

I am trying to get a shot of the Moon through some tree branches, and am having difficulty getting the detail of the moon. It is blown out. I've tried changing shutter speed and ISO settings with no luck.
Does anyone have input on finding the right combination of
shutter speed and aperture to get the details of the moon?

Canon 6D/Tamron 150-600mm @ 600mm plus 1/200 sec.-f/6.3-ISO @ 200 plus good contrast and detail (PP) will = A good detailed moon photo.

Sonny, I spell Pinenuts with a "Z" on purpose. A friend has a website called "Cola Nutz" and since I have a Forestry degree, and cola nutz was taken, I decided to spell my website as Pinenutz. :D

I like to be different than the majority, in some cases!

Proper exposure of the moon itself, requires that you follow the "Sunny 16" rule (exposure = what you would use on a bright, sunny mid-day shot).

To also get detail in the foreground, a 'merged' photo is required, like the example above.

Absolutely right on.

When you say "merge" photo are you talking about
an editing program such as Star Stax or Photoshop?
(not in the Camera, right?)

For purposes of taking a picture, the surface of the moon is the equivalent of a city sidewalk at noon, maybe a bit brighter because of there being no atmosphere.
