I went to a church function tonight all set to take some great shots. I took my camera out of the bag and was about to put the sling over my head when, for some reason, my hand just let go and the camera went to the floor. (Canon T3 w/18-55mm lens). The camera seems to be okay, but the lens glass shattered. I have no idea who I can trust to look it over and even if a repair can be done. Is it worth it or just get a new lens? Should I have the camera gone over to to make sure all is in order? I prefer to take it to a local shop (Northern NJ) rather than send it away. Advice, please!

I did the same thing about 1 1/2 months ago and my Sony Alpha 55 landed on a ceramic tile floor - lens first. Instead of breaking the lens glass, I broke the UV filter which took the impact. I will always use UV filters on my lenses despite naysayers.

Advice: Contact Canon to get an RA# and send the whole thing back to them. Because lenses cost them so little, they may just send you a new or new-returned one and not even charge you for it to maintain customer loyalty. Or if there is a charge it would be minimal. Shops are going to charge you by their hourly rate which could get expensive because it's not manufacturer's defect but your mistake.

I'm sorry to here about your accident. The body should be checked out but the lens is better replaced. The repair cost would probably be greater then the replacement cost. Now might be a good time to look at some of the upgrade lens Canon offers.

I would have a pro look over the body for any damage and possible glass inside. Once that's done yes, buy a new lens.

If the drop shattered your lens glass, I suspect there is, at least, some minor damage to the camera. Hopefully you got lucky, but you don't want to find out something is amiss while on a shoot. Have it looked at. If you can find a certified repair shop locally, I would try them first.

Invest in a good strap and the first thing you do from now on is put it on. I never never never handle my camera without having the safety strap on first. I know that straps are not infallible, but get a good one and always check it for wear. A climber would never trust a piece of climbing gear that is frayed or damaged in any way. I like the Optech Pro straps and the Black Rapid straps. I like Black Rapid better because it's a shoulder strap not a neck strap. But as far as neck straps are concerned, the Optech Pro is one of the best. The Pro uses ballistic nylon cord to hold it to the camera. A sure way to fasten the camera to the strap.

Just so you know.
Last week I made a post in this forum. It was ...Just thought I'd ask, "where's a good place to purchase camera and lens insurance."

Last night I was at a meeting of my camera club and we had a guess speaker showing individuals what to consider when shooting Macro. Most of the small group had our camera's on tripods and I did too. But for just about 30-45 seconds I turned to a table to retrieve a flower that I brought and looked back only to see my equipment on the floor. No one said they saw it fall. The legs of the tripod were all locked in place so it wasn't a case of one of the legs folding. So now i have a broken lens and a mark on my camera. Thank God the camera still works. Insurance advice please!

Just so you know I sent my $550. lens to Tamron Lens for repair and it's going to cost about $250 to about $325 including shipping overnight express to have it this fixed. Home owners insuranace is going to provide insurance for about $20/year for two lenses.
And thank you for this forum for mentioning Homeowners insurance.

I bought an 18-200 lens and it failed, It would not focus or lock, I sent it to Canon repair. They took the time to keep in steady contact with me to verify the repair was a warranty, notified me again when the diagnosis was complete and the repair was scheduled. Again when the repair was complete and anticipated shipping date.
I would highly recommend Caqnon repair in NJ.
I am a happy Canon customer

Some local repair shops end up sending the camera to the main repair anyway. So perhaps better to send to Canon in the first place, at least they will have all the parts if they are necessary. May take longer but get it done correctly the first time around.
I send in my vote for Black Rapid straps as well.

I did have the camera attached to the Black Rapid sling strap (which I love!), but I guess as I was putting it on (before it went over my head), that's when my hand just let go and it feel to the floor. What a difference a second or two makes!

First check with Canon factory repair, usually they have a reasonable flat price to go over a camera and bring it back to spec.

If you upgrade you might look into home owners insurance like rebeil has. I also bought home owners insur on my equipment and laptops after my daughter got her laptop stolen from her car. I cover 2 nice laptops and camera equipment totaling around $10,000 for under $100 per year. Covers everything, lost, stolen, broken, anything. Well worth it.
