$1500 is the perfect amount for the Nikon D7000 that I own. It's the most technically advanced DSLR on the market. I love it.

Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax and a few other are all excellent manufacturers. You are going to hear a lot of huffing and puffing about this camera and that camera. Ignore all of it and read DPreview.com about the major camera models in you price range. Go straight to the conclusion at the end and see how each stack up not against each other, but for the type of photography that you want to do (I.e slow auto-focus may be a killer if you want to do wildlife and poor low light performance may be an issue for landscape). Pick 3 or 4 models. Go to a local, dependable store and handle each. Feel the controls, take each to a window shoot out into bright light, go to a dark corner and shoot. Play with each to get a feel and find the one that feels best to YOU. If if does not feel good to you, you will not use it. You may want to buy the camera elsewhere, that is another issue. Again, ignore ALL of the huffing and puffing. I shoot Nikon (been shooting since the early `60s), but I have seen Canons, Sonys, and Pentax that are ever bit as good. The difference that other tout is so slight that the you will never notice and it will be gone tomorrow because today best is tomorrow third or forth place. So don't worry about it. In the end, I don't think that you can go wrong with any of the major bands. Go have fun. DON'T pay any attention to the elitist. So are good photographers, but all elitist are full of crap.

D7000 - hands down

I disagree with you there. I too am a Nikon shooter and a friend who has a D7000 kept telling over and over to try her D7000. I did and I will say that is an excellent camera. But no were near the all out hands down winner. In fact if I replace my present camera it will not be with a D7000, because of the failure to meet my requirements for another camera. There are just too many applications where it fall short. In fact I would more than likely wait for the D800 (which I would NOT recommend to any person new to photography). There is NO hands down winner. The range of requirement for all photographers is way to great for that to happen. And when you couple this with the fact that many if no most of the top international photographer are still shooting with cameras that they acquired years ago, for someone to make such a claim is way out of line, as to the answer to which camera may best suit an individual other than themselves. For an example of what a good photographer can do with older equipment allow me to refer you to the following web site and inform you that many of the landscape images were captured with an 11 maybe 12 year old 3 mega-pixel camera. http://www.danmassey.co.uk/main_menu.htm

I have to agree the d7000 is the way to go i bought one 3 months ago and it is fast very responsive and image quality is top notch. i bought mine with 50 mm 1.8 g lens which is tack sharp. you might consider going with a prime lens such as 50 mm 1.8 or 35mm 1.8 these prime lenses are going to put the kit zoom lenses to shame i got mine at b&h photo 1439.00 out the door no tax and free shipping.

You say nothing about any previous photography experience, any handicaps that you may have, your hand size. All of which are far more important than canon vs Nikon, or Sony, Pentax, or what ever. They are all good cameras. What you need to do is put them in your hands, look through the view finder, etc. And as I have said before don't listen to elitist. There is NO way any of us can tell what your best chose would be.

As for the elitist out there, you may not believe so but you are not helping this or any individual looking for their best choice, so allow me to point you to an image that my youngest daughter and I often point to.

Whatever you buy, make sure it has an articulated LCD screen. Really makes a difference, esp. for high and low angle shots. You can even turn it so its facing you. Great for a self portrait. Canon calls theirs a "Vari-angle". Canon has a good demo of it on their official American Web site.
Their 60D, among others, has this feature. Even their fantastic, way-beyond-point-and-shoot, SX30is. With its 24-840 zoom lens, it's a great take-me-everywhere camera for under $500.00. Also, don't forget a polarizing filter.

First of all, the original poster did ask for advice so I'll give my 2 cents worth. I would opt for the D7000 even though I don't own one yet. It fits quite well in her budget and performs great. I don't know that it is the BEST camera out there but according to the reviews it's close to the best DX. I work with a professional photographer and he uses the D7000. His clients love the images from it.

You keep using the word elitist and yet you talk about the d800 which will be around 3000.00 dollars or so and the person asking for the advice clearly stated there budget was 1500.00 dollars. sounds like your the elitist

Not elitist, just in touch with reality enough to realize that anything other than basic generic advise is almost always misleading. What you gave was an opinion and not necessarily relevant to any other individuals needs. The question was Nikon vs Canon which the long established answer has always been, depends on which cameras for what purposes, with what individual, etc. In other words, there is not a best so why mislead anyone to think other wise unless your feel some need to justify your purchase or inflate your ego.
