Hi, I have just retired and want to do some landscape photography and also some travel photography.I am looking for a Canon SLR for landscape work and wondered if anyone had any info which of the canon slr's and lenses I should be looking at.I used to have a nikon D3000 system which I gave to a friend about a year ago,as she was interested in photography, but had no money.I have a budget of around $1000/$1500 for the SLR.I would appreciate any advice on the SLR and on which lens I should use....Thanks.

I know you are looking for a cannon, but have you thought about a Pentax ? I have a Pentax KR with less than 500 clicks on it and a multitude of lenses, bag and all. that is great for your purpose and more.

Get a Canon T5i and save the rest of the money until you figure out what lens you would like to add to your equipment, Bob.

Why are you stuck on Canon? Canon produces decent cameras but they are way behind in sensor quality at the moment. The money you have available can buy a new Nikon D7100 plus a decent zoom lens like 18-140mm, a very versatile lens. The D7100 is rated way higher than any Canon crop sensor camera of near similar cost. Not all UHH will agree :D

If you go used you could pick up a D7100 body and Nikon's excellent 24-120 VR lens - a pro quality zoom.

If you are set on a Canon, A refurbished 7d and an 18-135 would more than meet your criteria.Although the 7dmk2 is now available the 7d is still a hellofa camera. I know cause I own one.

What size sensor do you want to use? New, refurbished, used? Too many answers are needed for a reasonable answer to be determined now.

I would hold off for about a month and do some research. Maybe try things out in a store...

There is a new Rebel about to be announced, and that may change the pricing landscape, especially for the T5i....

The T5i is very weak, for similar money look at the Nikon D5300, a much more capable camera.

Welcome!

I have a T3i, and I think you'll find there isn't much difference between it and the T5i, maybe just in video and continuous shooting mode speed.

I decided I like my camera so much, I bought a second body recently as they're not making anymore. With a used Canon 18-135 mm lens, I am having a great time with landscapes! Photo #1 of the below series is with that combo:

Have you looked into the detail of how snapsort comes up with its valuations?

Even if their methodology is valid, which many have questioned, the factors considered in reaching one of their score comparisons may have nothing to do with any individual person's preferences and requirements. These kinds of simple comparisons are generally directed at the uninformed or the simple minded, not the mostly intelligent and thinking population of UHH.

We have also had an individual recently who tried trolling the site and created spurious and deliberately erroneous comparisons using Snapsort in an apparent attempt to discredit Snapsort as well as a specific vendor's products.

Perhaps you could cite more credible sources for your conclusions and suggestions?

Yes, Buster is going crazy, and the guys that can't shoot haven't even chimed in yet!!

I would recomend a used Canon 7Dl before I would recommend ANY nikon Crop camera. It will cost less and be as good. Add a 15-85 and that is a killer combo. The old 7D will probably outshoot the new 7200 when it comes out.

Now if you're purely a paper shooter and all tweaked out about DR and mp, and will never use the camera in the real world, just go to DXO and spin the wheel!! With bad luck it will land on one of those orphans, like Sony!!
