Cruz: It’s common sense that Americans who join terrorists should lose citizenship

Posted on January 23, 2015 by Sam Rolley Views:

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) re-introduced legislation Friday that would strip U.S. citizenship from individuals suspected of traveling overseas to fight alongside ISIS and other known terror organizations.

“We’ve seen the grave consequence of the Obama-Clinton-Kerry foreign policy unravel with respect to Iran, Russia and now Yemen,” Cruz said of the legislation. “These consequences are not confined to faraway lands. They directly threaten America and our allies.”

“That is why this week, I am re-filing the Expatriate Terrorist Act, which prevents Americans who have fought abroad for designated terrorist groups from returning to the United States,” he said. “I look forward to working with senators on both sides of the aisle on this and additional measures to secure our nation and restore America’s leadership in the world.”

Cruz first presented a version of his Expatriate Terrorist Act (E.T.A.) last year, but Senate Democrats quashed the proposal because it hadn’t been examined by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“Legislation that grants the government the ability to strip citizenship from Americans is a serious matter, raising significant constitutional issues,” said Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) at the time.

Cruz responded to objections against the legislation with disappointment, saying that his common-sense proposal was meant to quickly address a direct threat to the safety of American citizens.

“The question is very simple: would any reasonable person want an American who is right now in Iraq, who is right now training with ISIS, who is right now taking up arms, who is right now participating in crucifying Christians, who is right now beheading children, who [has] right now participated in beheading two American journalists, who is right now standing arm in arm with virulent terrorists who have pledged to take jihad to America — would anyone of good conscience in either party want that person to be able to come back and land in LaGuardia airport with a U.S. passport and walk unmolested onto our streets?” he said.

Cruz contends that the changing nature of global terror threats– including the increasing ease with which terror groups can reach out to and radicalize Westerners using social media — merits a new discussion about providing due process to people who leave the U.S. to join foreign radicals.

Along with his legislative announcement, the Texas lawmaker released a video criticizing President Barack Obama’s foreign policy and weak response to global terror.

The video, titled “It’s Time To Face Reality,” challenges statements Obama made on Russia, Iran, Yemen and Islamic terrorism.

I think there is some sort of international law about making someone a person without a country. I think everyone is considered to be entitled to be a citizen of somewhere.

Cruz's proposal is unnecessary. The constitution already provides that citizenship may be removed from individuals who serve in a foreign army voluntarily.

No, I don't. And how do you know? You only suppose a slippery slope. In addition, you propose no solution to Muslim terrorists returning to America soil to do harm to innocents. Taking away citizenship for siding with the enemy appears reasonable. After all, the West no faces a war to the death with Muslim terrorists conducting an international jihad. A wartime footing effectively exists, and calls for wartime responses.

I sort of agree BUT:
The problem with guys like Ted Cruz is, that would only be the beginning. It's starts with people who join terror groups would lose citizenship-

Then it becomes people who support terror groups should lose their citizenship.

Then it slips to people who are suspected of affiliation with terror groups should be stripped of their citizenship.

Then at last it becomes people who openly criticize the government should be considered terrorists & therefore be incarcerated & lose their rights to vote. And on and on .... You get the point ...

You ask: "Anyways what Muslim terrorists returning to America soil are you talking about? "

From what I gather, the authorities follow individuals who travel to nations with active Muslim terrorists, and by intelligence learn of their radicalization and conversion to the hate ideology of Islam. Such reports routinely appear in the news. I refer to such individuals.

I agree. HLS keeps close tabs on those people. HLS keeps tabs on all kinds of things- more so than you may realise. Google 'OFAC'

If you want to download a list of who the Department of treasury is keeping an eye on you can go here. http://www.treasury.gov/resource-center/sanctions/SDN-List/Pages/default.aspx

Those Americans who join terrorists should
be brought back to the USA to serve hard time and after that be deported to the Middle East and have their passports cancelled and citizenship revoked.

You "think"? No kidding! Who passed such a ridiculous law? Somalia maybe? Or Sudan perhaps? Lower Slobovia? The U.N.? Who cares?

I think anyone who leaves this country to go fight with a terror group should be dragged off of the plane if and when they attempt to return, and then be given a "free swimming lesson", starting in the very middle of the Atlantic Ocean; just "toss 'em in and let them "learn to swim" on their way back.......(to Africa perhaps )

Being a card-carrying libturd, I'm sure YOU "think" all "poor people" should be given a million dollars so that they would be able to enjoy the life that they always wanted to become accustomed to; the only problem being, you want "someone else" to pay for it.

Gitzo you got it right again.
That asshole thommy has those juvenile idiotic thoughts in his head and can't help himself barfing it up.
In his warped mind he would blow the million dollars and blame the government for not teaching him how to do better.
Much like typical libtards.
Sounds like thommie is getting ready to go and join the moooslim forces and wants obummer to have his back.

Just taking away citizenship and cancelling passports and leaving them stranded outside the USA would be very kind indeed.
I personally want to get them killed before they come anywhere near the USA. Declare open season on them with a bounty for each verified kill.

Sorry, I have not always been this way but sure feel that that is where we need to be.

At the very least, the West, along with China and Russia, must target for elimination the active Muslim terrorists, starting wherever possible with the top leadership and then working down the leadership ladder.

With no good leadership in position, the lesser Muslim terrorists will become relatively ineffective and easier to pick off to send to Allah.

This killing program must continue indefinitely, until such time the moderate Muslim leadership steps forward with an olive branch and a plan for neutralizing the international Muslim jihad involving terrorism and the murder of innocents, both Muslim and non-Muslim.

The planet can have no general peace without the end of Muslim terrorism.

And of course, America could add to the peace by a policy of keeping its standing armies out of Muslim nations.
